Icelandic Lemonade

joe_distSometimes when life gives you lemons, you make lemonade. We made gallons of lemony goodness today in Iceland, overcoming adversity and challenges thrown at us from all directions. Our day started gloomy, with dark clouds and a steady rain turning the Icelandic landscape into a foreboding place. Looking forward to breakfast and coffee to shake the sleep off and lift our spirits, we arrived in the dining room of our backwoods Chateau Atco sleeping arrangements to find that the chef had chosen to sleep in, leaving the room dark, cold, and devoid of food. Some grub was eventually rustled up, and we packed up our junk show and hit the road.

Icelandic Adventures – Part 2

The-switchFour hours by car northeast of Reykjavik, through lush ocean meadows and arid moonscape plains, we arrive at this tiny outpost hotel. Basically Atco trailers in the desert. Another hour on rough, rocky, volcanic plains and the earth explodes into one of the wildest landscapes any of us has ever seen. Broken lava, mountains colored everything from black to pink, with fluorescent green and blood red thrown in for good measure. Incredible moss flows down beach hued ridgelines like streams, while giant glaciers loom in the distance. Throw in grey muck spewing geysers that steam away in every other valley and you’ve got yourself Landmannalagaur, Iceland. But that’s not all. How about wicked singletrack that no one ever rides. Too good to be true. Look for the feature Bike Magazine in the next few months.

Team Seagal is not your average team.

the-geekFrom the reasoning of the Dawg name to the best comic book authors, from the history of the Hot to a timeline of industrial music, Cory has the trivia, and the opinions to mouth off about it.

Team Seagal is a different kind of team. First and most noticeably, they’re named after Steven Seagal. Yeah, that’s different. They race singlespeeds in St. Louis, MO (and now Milwaukee, WI) and two of their biggest sponsors are Pabst Blue Ribbon and Kona Bicycles. Oh, and the races they put on? Those are called Non-Races. Okay.

Preparing for RAAM: Ian Fillinger’s Ultimate Training Ride

Picture 1 Ian Fillinger will be ramping up his preparation for the 2010 Race Across America with an Ultimate Training Ride through several communities in BC and Alberta. Ian begins his ride at 6am on Thursday, September 3 2009 when he will depart from the Kamloops Curling Rink. From there, his route will take him to Clearwater, Blue River, Valemount, Jasper, Lake Louise, Golden, Revelstoke, Enderby, Salmon Arm and Kamloops. He is hoping to complete this ambitious 1,211 km ride in less than 50 hours!

This Ultimate Training Ride is another step in Ian’s focus of completing the Race Across America to End MS scheduled for June 9, 2010. At roughly 3,200 miles, the Race Across America (RAAM) ultra-marathon bicycle race is one of the longest annual endurance cycling events in the world. Unlike most multi-day bicycle races, the RAAM has no stages; the clock runs non-stop from start to finish, with the rider cycling approximately 22 hours a day for eight to nine days.
