Joe Schwartz – Whistler Opening Weekend

I usually try and avoid the opening weekend of the Whistler Bike Park. Some reasons for my refusal to participate in this annual event are paltry few muddy trails open, huge lines and the fact that other Sea to Sky venues are in mint shape this time of year, including, well, everywhere else.

I went this year. I think the Whistler Corp would like to hear that it was because of their barrage of marketing prior to the lifts firing up. Not really, although I did enjoy the first “Force of Nature” video released before opening, featuring their motley bunch of bike athletes (video below). The video shows riders carving perfect corners and lofting sculpted lips in what looks like epic mid-season conditions. Pretty convincing stuff, but the deciding factor for me was some good ‘ol fashioned arm-twisting by a group of buddies. A deal was struck where we worked out a balance of park and pedal, in a few Sea to Sky locations, over this Canadian long weekend. Read More

Kona Destinations: Surf It Boards and Bikes, Heffley Lake, BC

Adding to our exclusive selection of the world’s best Bike Parks, the Kona Destinations program and its partners showcase the top riding areas in Canada to give you the ultimate biking experience. Check out our first Destinations spotlight brought to you by Bodie Shandro of Surf it Boards and Bikes in Heffley Lake, BC.

“It’s all about fun and easy riding here, cruzy relaxed backroads and single-track trails where you rarely see a another soul.  The 26″ Fire Mountain and 29″ Mahuna were made for this type of recreational, laid back riding. Sure Kamloops has it’s own scene and so does nearby Sun Peaks Resort, but riding around Heffley Lake is so chill, just the way I love it. Where there is no better way to rinse of the dust than jumping on a paddle board and hitting the water. 8km of pristine bays, wildlife galore and hardly a sole in sight! Read More

Super Grassroots Racer Andy Olsson – Newport Coast Hills Classic XC

Last week I picked up my new Hei Hei Supreme and was eager to test it out. My wife and I headed out to the coast for the Newport Coast Hills Classic XC for our first race of the year. I had no expectations going into the race other than not being DFL. There were some turbo looking guys there so I sort of assumed my position towards the end of the pack. Steadily I started to pick guys off and going into the second lap the race director said I was 30 seconds back. What? I thought there were another ten guys ahead. Pulled up to the next guy in front and asked how many more. Only one. Spent the rest of the lap trying to pull him in but was unsuccessful. The bike was fast and furious, certainly exceeded my expectations, ended up in second place. Not a bad start to the season. After finishing the winner asked, “Aren’t you riding enduro mostly?” I guess people are starting to notice my riding. Alice Pennington took the win in pro women also on board a new Hei Hei Supreme.

Bicycling.com Checks out the Red Zone at Sea Otter

Bicycling.com reports: Kona’s headquarters are in Bellingham, Washington—deep in the rainy Pacific Northwest. There, the staff at a company best known for mountain and ‘cross bikes, often rides dirt roads—and often wants to ride with fenders mounted to keep their feet and seats protected from muddy road spray. These days, there are lots of bikes with clearance for wide, dirt road-friendly tires, and others with fender mounts, but most of those bikes are built around Classics geometry—an upright position and stable handling. Kona’s new Red Zone marries bigger clearance with a race bike’s aggressive position—a category the company is calling “endurance race.” Without fenders, the bike will accommodate 32c tires, or 28c tires if you have fenders installed.

Kona designed the frame in conjunction with Deda, and built it out of 30-ton carbon, which they say is strong enough to resist dings from gravel thrown into the frame—but also has enough damping built in to dull big hits. The bike is compatible with electronic and mechanical drivetrains. With SRAM Red, the complete bike costs $5,500. The mechanical Shimano Ultegra build costs $3,600.

New Frontier on a Bike

Kona USA’s Dale Plant reports: New Frontier on a Bike…is what someone called it.

I just got back from a sales trip in AK where I went on this amazing ride (mostly) on the Skookum glacier in Portage (about an hour south of Anchorage near the Kenai Peninsula) with Greg & crew from Speedway Cycles/Fatback Bikes…our awesome Kona dealer in Anchorage.

It was perfect “crust” riding which only happens after several melt/freeze cycles in the spring that lasts for about a couple weeks. You could ride most anywhere with amazing traction. It was a bit like slick rock on snow. We rode from about 8:30 to noon when it started warming up and getting too soft.
