SSCXWC 2009 – Bringin’ the Bacon!

Thursday, November 12th, 2009

baconA handful of Kona employees/racers and Kona athletes made their way to Portland last weekend because they didn’t want to miss the “cross event of the millennium” (plus this was the 3rd and last year it was in Portland)…next year Seattle (who won a hard fought battle with San Francisco) gets to host and try to match the over-the-top bar that has been set by the Portland crew.

Kona played a domestique roll in the SSCXWC by supplying freshly fried bacon hand-ups to all SSCXWC racers. Barry Wicks carried a mussette bag full of beverages and did hand-downs to spectators.

Sounds like it was quite the post-apocalyptic throw down at the Singlespeed Cyclocross World Championships in Portland, Oregon. You’ll find one of the best articles on the event written by our friends at VeloNews.com. Sounds like the Kona crew dove right in to the Beyond Thunder Dome theme: “Barry Wicks wore a sweater vest and what looked like wool britches, carrying a musette full of adult beverages that he happily dispersed to a willing crowd. Ryan Trebon ran most of the first lap with his dog on a leash.” Check out the madness here.

Barry and the Bear

Monday, November 9th, 2009

WickNasty_dist3There is a bear living in my back yard. Not just metaphorically, but a real, live B.C. Bike Race, eat the small dog, massive apple sauce poop pile, growling, stinky, large black type of bear out there. I am not really too concerned about it, aside from the slight danger faced by the aforementioned small dog during night time bathroom breaks, but the bear makes me think about my place in the world. Before I came here, he/she probably just hung out on this hillside during the fall, gorging on apples, pears and blackberries and didn’t have to contend with shot gun wielding skinny bike racers yelling “cover me!” as they took the trash out or headed out for training rides.

Orange Crush podiums on both sides of the pond

Monday, October 26th, 2009

First. On the Americas side…

It was once again a battle of KONA versus Cannondale/CyclocrossWorld.com as Trebon and teammate Barry Wicks took a first lap lead only to be chased down by the tenacious trio of New England racers Tim Johnson, Jamey Driscoll and Jeremy Powers. After a barrage of attacks, the lead group boiled down to Trebon, Johnson, Driscoll and Anthony.

The Twin Towers on the Podium Again

Tuesday, October 20th, 2009

Trebon came up big again at Granogue, where the reigning U.S. national champion earned his first UCI win of the season. Wicknasty takes second.

“I’ve always really liked this course,” Ryan said. “It’s a hard race even when it’s dry because there are enough hills to make it very technical. Add in conditions like today, it’s an even greater challenge just to ride sections cleanly.”

Barry Survives CrossVegas

Tuesday, October 6th, 2009

wicknasty_dist3I am Barry’s cracked and bleeding sinuses, poring sticky sweet goo down into his nasal cavity. I am draining my wrath out on to his upper lip as he gasps for breath in the dry desert night. I am vengeful and full of hate. The evil stench of a million vacant souls trickles in past mucus and hair and fills me up to the brim, reinforcing my quest to punish in every way I can. Damn you who wants me to stand around in a massive germ filled vacuum of recycled, processed, “enhanced” air at Interbike all day. I am not your servant, I am my own piece of your soul.

Pontificating the Interface

wicknasty_dist3Should I run the 32c or 34c today? File tread? Semi knob? Mud tire? Sticky rubber or normal? Maybe Dual Compound? Why do i have so many choices? I wish I could just strap on a thin layer of rubber to my perfect casing, go pedal as hard as I want, and the tire could magically morph into the perfect combination of grip and speed that I need to power to victory. That is a bunch of wishful thinking. But how much difference does my tire choice really make?

Barry Wicks Pines on the Dichotomy of Cross

Monday, August 24th, 2009

wicknastyviz1Sunlight filters down through clouds of thick orange smoke onto my stinging neck as trickles of sweat poor into my eyes blurring the line between road and cliff. I strain against my pedals, willing my bike forward as the oppressive hot smokey air tears at my lungs and tries to break my will to continue. I force my body onward, it is only two hours to home, two short hours to sweet relief, prone on the couch in tight socks, cool drink in hand, cool tunes on the head phones, snacks at hand, and nap imminent. My life is split into two distinct and very separate experiences.

BC Bike Race Day 4

Thursday, July 2nd, 2009

the-wranglerjpg3Ah, Canada Day – the holiday where “you can do anything” for one day. Maybe that’s not the holiday’s real motto, but it is certainly the experience that BC Bike Race organizers would like to create on this day for their participants.

How’s this for the start of the fourth day of epic mountain biking and a celebration of west coast Canada? A 4:30am wake-up call as pre-cursor to watching the remnants of a beautiful sunrise over the Georgia Straight while waiting to board the first BC Ferries crossing of the day. Then chowing on breakfast while admiring the view of the coastal areas off the bow.
