Super Grassroots Racer Andy Olsson – Newport Coast Hills Classic XC

Last week I picked up my new Hei Hei Supreme and was eager to test it out. My wife and I headed out to the coast for the Newport Coast Hills Classic XC for our first race of the year. I had no expectations going into the race other than not being DFL. There were some turbo looking guys there so I sort of assumed my position towards the end of the pack. Steadily I started to pick guys off and going into the second lap the race director said I was 30 seconds back. What? I thought there were another ten guys ahead. Pulled up to the next guy in front and asked how many more. Only one. Spent the rest of the lap trying to pull him in but was unsuccessful. The bike was fast and furious, certainly exceeded my expectations, ended up in second place. Not a bad start to the season. After finishing the winner asked, “Aren’t you riding enduro mostly?” I guess people are starting to notice my riding. Alice Pennington took the win in pro women also on board a new Hei Hei Supreme.

Kona Super Grassroots – Gardner Racing California Enduro Report

This past weekend was the second installment of the California Enduro Series at the Dirt Club in Los Olivos CA. The format consisted of 8, 2-3 minute downhill runs with plenty of pedaling in between. The first four runs were faster and more downhill oriented and the last four were longer and less steep, putting each rider’s fitness to the test.

Enduro racing is gaining traction here in California and the growing list of competitors reflected that. Over 150 people showed up to get dusty in California’s version of the Serengeti Plaines. Gardner Racing was equally excited about the event. After packing up the van, they made the short trip away from the coast to the Santa Barbara County wine country. Read More

Super Grassroots Racer Alex Ryan Reports on the Terrapin Twilight XC

This weekend I rolled to the Terrapin Twilight in Athens, Georgia. They had a sweet Off-road time trial qualifier Saturday morning for the Fat tire crit Saturday night. The time trial consisted of a six minute singe track loop. I was able to secure the top TT time of 6:37, qualifying myself for the fat tire crit. The Fat Tire crit was on the Terrapin Twilight course a few hours before the main event. The crit was 30 minutes long with 4 turns & a slight uphill on the back stretch. After the first lap of the crit I was spun out and relied on some drafting techniques to stay in contention with the group. After 30 minute spin session, I crossed the line 10th.

Sunday was round 3 of the US-CUP/S.E.R.C series in Winder, Georgia. The morning started off fairly wet with a massive rain storm rolling in mid race. The 4 lap, 31 mile race ended up becoming a mud fest, drifting in every turn. The race stayed together for the first 3 laps then attacks started on the final lap resulting in a small group of 5 riders drilling it to the finish. After a last minute surge, I ended up 4th.

Kona Velocity wd-40 team race report

Another great day on Sunday where both the Youth A and Junior teams were racing at Hog Hill, Essex, UK; a podium for Matt Walls and top ten finishes for Jack Escritt and Christian Braybrooke aboard their Zing Supremes. We were also lucky enough to be accompanied on the day by the promotional girls from The WD-40 Company. They were a big hit in sunny Essex.

Kona Super Grassroots Racer Geoff Huber – Win Some, Lose Some

This year’s edition of the Mudslinger marked the 25th running of the event. Mother nature showed up to make sure there was plenty of mud to go around and all 300+ racers enjoyed this classic event. My first Mudslinger was back before Y2K. I was still a newbie, but I had been “training” a lot and thought I was bound for victory. The truth is I finished DFL in the Expert class that year, got passed by the young buck that won the Juniors, and, get this…a guy riding a full rigid single speed, in sweat pants AND platform pedals! That race shoved so much humble pie down my throat I was sick for a week.

But I have also had success at the Mudslinger. I won the Test Of Endurance (the 50 mile version of the same race), the N.W. Single Speed Championships (same course, different name), came a very close second when it was the State Championship race a couple years ago, a win two years ago, and second again last year. Not bad all in all, win some, lose some. Read More
