Joe Schwartz: Trail Opening Celebrations

With the arrival of spring comes the introduction of new trails, poking up out of the melting snow like so many April flowers. They may have been lovingly crafted over the previous summer, granting a lucky few passage before the winter took hold, or they are a result of a trail builder’s many dark, wet, cold days digging and sculpting while others are riding powder on the higher reaches of the mountains (myself included).

Regardless of when they were built, these fresh nuggets of mountain biking pleasure reveal themselves to us in the spring, bringing exciting new experiences to share with our friends. New climbs to conquer, gaps to clear, or technical DH lines to master, these handcrafted pieces of dirt artistry hold in them the potential for another season’s worth of adventure, fun and challenge. Regular Joe – Season Recap

As the days grow shorter, the nights colder and the dirt even tackier, I look back at a great season of bicycle riding. It was one of big changes for me, as I graduated from the BCIT School of Business Marketing Management program in May, and started a job as the Brand Specialist for Ryders Eyewear in June. This new position is pretty ideal for me, as it allows for plenty of time off during the bike season to pursue my riding adventures, as Ryders understands the value in my athlete lifestyle.

I stayed really busy this summer, running the Joe Schwartz Freeride Camp in Calgary and coaching for the Summer Gravity Camps in Whistler.

I had many photos published this season including a Bike Mag Photo Annual spread. Osprey used a couple shots of me extensively on their hydration pack hangtags, catalog, and advertising materials. Read More

Regular Joe – National Park Singletrack

Some mountain bike meccas have their “mecca” designation handed to them with ease. All of the elements are there for them: the ideal topography, a dedicated bunch of locals with a vision, and the freedom to ride in the aforementioned hills.

Jasper mountain bikers have never had it easy. The town is situated in the middle of a national park, which presents many obstacles on the road to becoming a mountain bike destination. Parks Canada, which was formed exactly 100 years ago in 1911, has never held mountain bikes in high esteem, shutting them out completely from vast areas of national park land. Jasper, however, is a living, breathing anomaly in the Parks world, with mountain bikers slowly carving out a niche for themselves in the middle of the Canadian Rockies. Read More

Regular Joe – Shiny Toys

Everyone knows the feeling of getting something shiny and new. It could have been your last birthday, or Christmas, or maybe a little treat to yourself after a momentous occasion, like finishing school.

I just bought a brand-new iPhone. I baby that thing like it is made of glass. I make sure the face is clean or that it is not getting stored with any sharp objects on my ride to work. I even put it in a little cloth bag on mountain bike rides to preserve its shiny, almost-new sheen. Some might say I go out of my way to do so.

It is no different with a new car. People want to keep that glossy, fresh-off-the –lot look for as long as possible. Great lengths are taken to ensure this. Waxes, polishes, buffers and repeated vacuuming. A lot of effort and stress is put into keeping that new vehicle in perfect shape. Seems like it takes the fun right out of owning that new vehicle, doesn’t it? Read More

Regular Joe Interviewed on NSMB

Photo: Cam McRae/NSMB

How do you follow up life as a pro athlete? When your first act is so sweet the idea of a 9 to 5 is pretty tough to swallow. It appears that Joe Schwartz has it figured out.

You don’t know Joe Schwartz? Let me get you up to speed. Joe competed in Red Bull Rampage three times (and judged last year), rode in NWD 1-5, as well as Drop In and on Ride Guide and he’s still seen on magazine covers worldwide. Joe is legit.

Joe and I did this interview last year and then it got hung up. Fortunately what we talked about still applies. Joe has become a big city boy after being born and raised in Nelson B.C. Having him in town was a great excuse to get out for a ride and take some photos. Last year at this time we couldn’t get up high on the mountain so we did some low elevation laps. This year all the trails are wide open and the winter riding has been epic.

What can Joe teach you? He’s carved out a life that involves getting paid to ride and ski for most of the year. He’s a guide for Big Mountain Adventures as well as a coach at Summer Gravity Camps in Whistler and at his own camp in Calgary in the summer. Come winter he’s leading paying customers at heli and cat ski operations around B.C. – but not this winter. He’s paying some dues and doing some learning – as you’ll see.

Regular Joe Returns to the Shire

Homecoming
There is a certain comfort with the trappings of home. The familiar nooks and crannies of a house that one has grown up in, the hiding places, the comfort that is bred through this familiarity. The trails I grew up on evoke similar feelings. After spending a couple summers away from the Kootenays I enjoyed a homecoming this August. The summer was full of exciting adventures and new experiences, but I was looking forward to re-visiting the trails I once knew so well.

More than just the trails themselves, the feeling of re-immersing myself in an environment that nurtured me from a young age was a comfort in itself. The stoic and silent mountains that I grew up in seemed to welcome me as I climbed up the logging road towards the first Kootenay trail of my return. Even the scents of the forest seemed familiar, reminding me of my youthful adventures on the very same mountain. As I dropped into the trail, I was struck by not only vivid memories of the singletrack ahead, but my body also remembered, muscles anticipating explosive moves that lay ahead. It was like I had never left; two seasons of absence erased in the few moments it took to push off at the top. The track had evolved over time, of course, but I had evolved too, and I was ready for any surprise or alteration to the trail. Favourite lines re-introduced themselves, and new routes popped up as well, some of them attacked and some of them noticed too late, but committed to memory for the next chance at the trail. That chance might be the next day, or maybe two more years away.

It is an intoxicating feeling to return to trails that have ingrained themselves on my riding style. These trails didn’t just leave a mark because of a single good day once upon a time, but these nooks and crannies of the forest left an impact on me as a young person, moments that played a crucial role in life decisions that led me to where I am today. To re-visit these special parts of my upbringing was uplifting and re-assuring. And not to mention some damn good bike riding too.

Regular Joe and the Search for Sweet Gulf Island Singletrack

Hunting for Singletrack
It all started with a vague idea, the connection of a destination with the faint promise of singletrack. Salt Spring Island offers all the elements of a great weekend get-away; ocean, funky town, amazing farmers market, and a laid-back island culture. The only thing missing from the picture was confirmed and recorded existence of sweet trails.

Knowing nothing of an existing bike scene on the island, I started in the place where all searches start these days: Google. The lack of information that popped up was surprising, but I continued to investigate. Armed with a couple phone numbers I started dialing. My phone calls led to very little, as the girl at the kayak store seemed to have never heard of mountain bikes, the tourist board had closed early, and the mountain bike association contact was the voice mail for a physiotherapist office.

Many of the best discoveries happen by chance, so I discarded my technological aids and went with the old fashioned way: show up and hope I run into a knowledgeable local. When we arrived on the island we went straight into the cozy town of Ganges to take in the amazing farmer’s market that happens every Saturday. As we perused the fresh produce and funky crafts that the market had to offer I kept my eye out for anyone wearing telltale bike clothing, or sporting chainring scars, or the more obvious clue of flashy bikes hanging off a truck tailgate. I spotted no such signs, as the predominate choice of attire at the market was long scarves, dreadlocks or “sporty” West Vancouver polo shirts.

Regular Joe at CransMontana, Switzerland

Crans Montana Bike Park from Joe Schwartz on Vimeo.

The Kona Groove-Approved Bike Park of Crans Montana is located in the Valais region of Switzerland. With panoramic views of Mont Blanc, the highest peak in Europe, and of the Matterhorn, this park delivers in majestic vistas and in rad terrrain for mountain biking. There are only two tracks, but both are long and demanding. One is a machine-built berm fest, and the other is a World Cup ready DH course. Both are exciting and action packed, and are very worthy of Kona’s Groove-Approved label.
