Sutra report from Ireland

“Garry @ MBW shop in Galway fixed me up with this blue Kona Sutra at the Irish bike show, a real cool, take you anywhere bike. All you have to do is point and pedal, a strong bike, hope to do many tours on it and have completed an strava challenge already with the bike doing over 1000km in April!. I love this bike so had to ride it back to Galway to its home town from Enniscorthy. On the return I did 107 miles Galway to Kilkenny so what does that say about the Sutra, if I can do it? Try it its a super bike!” – John Busher

Kona Velocity wd-40 team race report

Another great day on Sunday where both the Youth A and Junior teams were racing at Hog Hill, Essex, UK; a podium for Matt Walls and top ten finishes for Jack Escritt and Christian Braybrooke aboard their Zing Supremes. We were also lucky enough to be accompanied on the day by the promotional girls from The WD-40 Company. They were a big hit in sunny Essex.

Kona Sea Otter in Photos

For the first time in a few years, Kona had a booth displaying bikes at Sea Otter. The goal was to tell the world about our exciting new line-up of 2013 and 2014 carbon bikes. Models on display were the 2013 Hei Hei Supreme, 2013 Red Zone, 2014 Major Jake and the 2014 Supreme Operator and Operator. The booth was buzzing all four days of the show. With awesome California sunshine, huge crowds, and tons of press from all over the world, we had a blast showing off our new bikes. With our XC Team tearing up the competition (Barry Wicks finished 8th in a super competitive XC men’s race, and Spencer Paxson finished 6th in the CX on a Red Zone), it was nothing but positive vibes for the Kona Crew. Check out the photos by Kona Communications dude, Mitchell Scott.

The booth was super busy with press. Here Gravity Project Manager Chris Mandell give Bike Magazine the lowdown on the new Supreme Operator. Read More

California Dreaming

This past weekend, members of the Kona Factory Team started a 3 weekend race tour out in Northern California. The trip started off with a bang at the Kings Ridge Grasshopper series race. Spencer Paxson, Kris Sneddon, Cory Wallace and Barry Wicks where all in attendance. The race included a mix of gravel and dirt roads, pavement, big climbs, amazing views and tons of fun. Wicks tied for first in a photo finish with former Kona rider Geoff Kabush, with the rest of the gang not far behind.

The next day everyone swapped out their Red Zones for their Hei Hei Supremes, and ventured over to Napa Valley for the 20th edition of the Napa Valley Dirt Classic. Wicks rode a blistering pace to take the win, breaking his own course record from 2009 by 4 minutes. Sneddon came in with 2 other for a sprint finish for 2nd, only a few minutes later.

Now the team is finishing up the final details on their 2013 race bikes, having coconut water by the pool, and resting the legs for their assault on Sea Otter and the Whiskey 50 in the coming two weeks.

Good work guys, and good luck at Sea Otter!

2014 Sneak Peek – Titanium Rove

We just couldn’t resist crafting this beauty. Manufactured at Lynskey Performance Designs in the U.S.A. and sharing the same gravel-grinding, rough road geometry as our Kona Cromoly Rove, the new Ti Rove is a sweet addition to our line of Freerange Road bikes. Featuring big tire clearance and all the necessary eyelets for racks and fenders, the 3/2.5 Ti, Kona designed frame is drawn around a 44 mm headtube, using an external lower cup for a tapered steer tube fork resulting in a sturdy, confident, comfortable ride feel that’s perfect for riders wanting a supple, tough-as-nails but superlight do-it-all drop bar bike. From around-the-world touring to weekend ‘cross races, winter training to all-day dirt road adventures, the bike goes beautifully with our new Kona Project Two Carbon Disc fork, which should be available for aftermarket purchase early this summer. Frame sizes are: 47, 49, 53, 56, 59, 61cm. Our first production order arrives this spring, contact your local shop to order yours now. Read More

l’enfer du sud – Rouge Roubaix 2013

We Kona riders are a versatile crew. We may be known best for our antics on knobby tires and rooty, muddy trails from Washington to Mongolia to Belgium, but we’re also no strangers to the pavement and skinny(er) tires. Having rested up from the 2012/13 cyclocross season and some off-season adventures, it was time to get the band back together and get in shape for the 2013 season. Putting in winter road miles is typical practice to build fitness, as is doing so under the sun of the desert Southwest. In keeping with the practice, but adjusting the geography, Barry, Kris, Cory and myself traveled to St. Francisville, Louisiana for a team training camp off the beaten path, and to test our new Red Zone road bikes (and legs) on the pave of the Bayou State. We would cap off the week by racing in the fifteenth edition of the Rouge Roubaix, a wicked 104 mile road race through the gravel roads, hacked pavement, and surprisingly brutal terrain of the Tunica Hills in West Feliciana Parish. Kona Zing Supremes get their first outing with the Velocity WD-40 Team

With Matt Gibson returning back to the North West after a gruelling week in Scotland with the Olympic Development Programme, it was just three Velocity WD-40 juniors to contest the traditional season opener here in the North West – the Clayton Spring Classic. With Alex Braybrooke having stretched his legs for the second week running at Marsh Tracks in Rhyl, trying to outgun the E123s the day before, it was Christian his brother getting the first taste of adult racing on open roads here in the UK, joining second-years Will Thomas and Andy Leigh on the start line.
