Here’s why i think scraper bikes are damn cool, and I want to see stuff like this pop up everywhere.

I posted my Paddy Wagon recently, now we’ll take a look at another fixie, this one hailing from Springfield, MO.

I’m impulsive and have a short attention span. This means bikes get changed around a lot. On my 2007 Paddy Wagon, i wanted to change the paint, but wasn’t sure what to go for… so i stripped it. Its new name came courtesy of Hurl at Cars R Coffins who told me simply “Rust never sleeps” when he learned that i hadn’t clear coated it.
I may do that at some point, but right now i dig the raw look.

To celebrate Black History Month, MODSquad Cycles, the only bicycle shop located in historic Harlem, New York City, will donate 10% of its February 2010 revenue to Kona AfricaBike and Project Rwanda. In addition, Kona Bikes will donate an AfricaBike for raffle at MODSquad Cycles to customers who purchase at least $10 of retail goods. Owner Oyé Carr says, “AfricaBike combines capitalism with good works. For every two bikes purchased by Kona retailers, Kona donates a bike to an AIDS worker. Bikes are not just for sport. They are also a means of environmentalism and a source for social change.”

It’s pretty well established that we think riding a bike is fun, though I have noticed that many feel riding across town is more a chore than something fun to do.
First off, these people are mistaken. Riding in a city environment is a blast. “Playing in traffic” is a new way to approach cycling. Secondly, these people have never ridden in New York city. Riding in NYC is not like riding wherever you live… unless you live in NYC.

My write-up of the Dr. Dew definitely sparked some comments about peoples’ favorite Konas, and we’ve had a lot of fun reading the responses here in the office.
Big Jonny of Drunkcyclist fame (I’m not linking to the site, as it could offend some people) commented about his collection of Konas and his beer-grabbing Humu. big Jonny and i actually have matching really pink custom-painted Konas. His is an Explosif and mine’s a Major Jake. More about pinky in another post…

Everyone has their favorite bike. My personal favorite bike is either my Big Unit, or my single speeded Major Jake. But sometimes a bike emerges as an institution, and becomes something bigger than the individual bike. The Stinky has done that, and the Africabike certainly has. But for me, the Dr. Dew holds a special place.

Team Seagal is a different kind of team. First and most noticeably, they’re named after Steven Seagal. Yeah, that’s different. They race singlespeeds in St. Louis, MO (and now Milwaukee, WI) and two of their biggest sponsors are Pabst Blue Ribbon and Kona Bicycles. Oh, and the races they put on? Those are called Non-Races. Okay.

Last night I was in my garage, working on bikes. This isn’t a new thing, or even an uncommon thing. My friend was over getting his bike tuned up, and we were drinking some fine, canned macrobrews. He’s not much of a bike geek, and well, I obviously am. Since we were in my garage and working on bikes, the topic of discussion revolved around bikes most of the night. He asked lots of questions about different things on my different bikes, and I explained why what went where, or my reasoning on various parts, designs and ideas. (And my increasing love for riveted saddles)

Ryan Schutz is the Regional Director for the mountain states of the US for IMBA. Before that, he was half (okay, 2/3rds) of a trail care crew with his wife that crisscrossed the nation like some wayward pied piper with a shovel and a McLeod. If you have been to a mountain bike festival, you have met Ryan. Needless to say, the guy knows trails, advocacy clubs, and bikes better than nearly anyone. Here’s a quick Q&A that we had on the state of mountain biking advocacy today.
