Kona Sea Otter in Photos

For the first time in a few years, Kona had a booth displaying bikes at Sea Otter. The goal was to tell the world about our exciting new line-up of 2013 and 2014 carbon bikes. Models on display were the 2013 Hei Hei Supreme, 2013 Red Zone, 2014 Major Jake and the 2014 Supreme Operator and Operator. The booth was buzzing all four days of the show. With awesome California sunshine, huge crowds, and tons of press from all over the world, we had a blast showing off our new bikes. With our XC Team tearing up the competition (Barry Wicks finished 8th in a super competitive XC men’s race, and Spencer Paxson finished 6th in the CX on a Red Zone), it was nothing but positive vibes for the Kona Crew. Check out the photos by Kona Communications dude, Mitchell Scott.

The booth was super busy with press. Here Gravity Project Manager Chris Mandell give Bike Magazine the lowdown on the new Supreme Operator. Read More

Bicycle Cafe Freeride Camp In Kamloops

This past weekend I had the chance to gather a gang of young Kamloops rippers and serve them with some rad times in the Kamloops Bike Ranch. Alongside my friends Aggy and Matt Miles, we spent two days hanging out and shredding bikes with our crew of campers as they learned the ins and outs of how to terrorize the Bike Ranch the same way we do. Dylan Sherrard – Does This Look Infected?

I was twelve years old and sprinting along the edge of the Yukon River when I first listened to Sum 41’s “Does This Look Infected” album. That was my first taste of punk rock music and it felt like I had caught a virus. I listened to that album a lot back then and the fast tempo was overpowering. It was the soundtrack to running away, sprinting down single tracks, wheelie dropping picnic tables and poorly extending three-stars. Read More

Dylan Sherrard: Life In The Loops – Not Wasting The Winter

Winter sucks. I’ve never really thought of those dark and frigid months as a season holding opportunity, but rather as a bulk of time that requires passing. With the warmth of many pallet fires and an abundance of whiskey bottles the time can surely pass, but I grow restless at the mercy of such cheap thrills. Sheer boredom sinks in and the cold white silence of the season leaves a lot more to be desired. Read more

Darren Crash Maxwell Rides the Explosif 27.5

Darren Reports: Hey Kelly, here are a few pictures that Jesse Peterson took of me riding my Explosif 27.5, wearing my Kona jersey.

I gotta tell ya, this bike is a freakin’ blast!

Climbing has been great! Right now the way I have it set up it’s at 31 lbs. Light for me, for sure! And could maybe even go lighter in the long run! Descending has been surprising to say the least!

After riding with nothing less than 160 of travel up front, and 66 degree head angles, I thought the 120mm and 68 degrees were going to be scary. Not so much!

I’ve taken it down some true steeps, and it’s handling them well. Of course I’ve shot myself over the bars a couple of times, but that was more rider error than bike set up!

The 27.5 wheels seem to roll faster, up & down. I know that could be part “new bike adrenalin”, but I’m going with bike set up! Read More

CX Tokyo

This February, Barry, Erik Tonkin and I were invited to compete in Cyclocross Tokyo 2013. In short, it was one of the most memorable trips of my racing career. Never have I felt so appreciated as an athlete. I came away feeling like us Kona riders had accomplished more than just traveling to race our bikes. We had a chance visit with our Japanese distributors and visit several local dealers, talk with them about bike trends in Japan, what works, what doesn’t and shared many other ideas. I felt like a real Kona/cycling diplomat! It was a privilege to be included in this stellar event and see how things are done across the Pacific. Rather than a standard write-up, I attempted to make a manga-style comic of our experience…with a few regular photos for good measure. Photo credits thanks to CX TOKYO/Kei Tsuji Read the comic here.

Now Helen heads back to Europe to do battle with the European ladies for a few more weeks before returning to Louisville for another crack at the top step of the podium at the world champs.
