Nelson BC Loves Kona

The-switchI live in this cool little town called Nelson, British Columbia. It’s a bubble of sorts, far away from the city, full of happy shiny people. One things for certain though, Nelson (or Planet Neldoron as I like to call it) is Kona all the way. They’re all over the place, as you’ll see in this here little video of the Kootenay Fat Tire Festival’s under 5 downtown crit, sponsored by Gericks Cycle. Seems one little gaffer saw me filming and just had to steal the mini-shredders thunder with a showcase of his shiny new Shred 2-4. Got a love a proud kid.

My History With the Dr. Dew

the-geekFrom the reasoning of the Dawg name to the best comic book authors, from the history of the Hot to a timeline of industrial music, Cory has the trivia, and the opinions to mouth off about it.

Everyone has their favorite bike. My personal favorite bike is either my Big Unit, or my single speeded Major Jake. But sometimes a bike emerges as an institution, and becomes something bigger than the individual bike. The Stinky has done that, and the Africabike certainly has. But for me, the Dr. Dew holds a special place.

Dik Cox Day in Nanaimo

dik_cox_day

When most reps visit shops it is a quick in….show a bit of product….and out again. Kona’s rep, Dik Cox, takes another approach. The day is all about activities and getting the shop guys outside. I was lucky enough to tag onto Dik’s visit with Oak Bay Bikes in Nanaimo where they proclaimed October 1st to be Dik Cox Day.

Written Itinerary:
9:30 Meet for Coffee and load up bikes.
10:30 Ride GREAT single track in Nanaimo including the Abyss and Roller Coaster with the Oak Bay Bikes crew. Testing out the new Scandium Abra Cadabra, The 2010 Hei Hei 29′er and everyone trying out each other’s KONA rigs as well.
1:00 Shower and Lunch
2:30 T off time for Golf.
5:45 to 6:00 write a healthy order for 2010 KONA bikes and soft goods.
6:00-8:00 Dinner at the Cactus Club….you know what we are talking about here….!
8:00 until when ever….bowling.

NOT the typical day for a typical rep!

Thanks for having me along for Dik Cox Day in Nanaimo!

Smitty the Red is Huge in Japan.

Screen shot 2009-10-02 at 9.32.13 AM

Joe went to Japan for the first time to race bikes. Here’s what happened.

I arrived in Osaka airport on Thursday afternoon, after 4 days of travelling from Schladming to home then straight onto 3 flights to Japan. Wing Hills resort was a 4 hour drive from the airport; I was asleep for most of it though. The next morning I walked down to the pit area at the bottom of the track. As I got there the guys from AKI corporation had built my bike up for me and after meeting every one from the company over there I nipped back up to the hotel to get my riding kit, so I could get riding.

World Cup Finals 2009 Schladming, Austria

Joe Smiths best result of the year in Austria. Here’s how it all went down.

We arrived late Tuesday night and after a long sleep in our apartment right at the bottom of the track it was straight into course walk on Wednesday afternoon. The start of the track was the same as it’s been since I started racing here 3 years ago. It’s really fast and you are straight into the rough stuff right off the start. The top has some really fast chopped up corners split up with a couple of cool jumps and some small root sections. The track continues to take the same route down the mountain as normal with a few little changes this year where they have been making new forestry roads across the track which makes the track a little faster than before.
