Five Dudes, Kona Units and a Siberian Epic

What surely ranks among the most unusual and challenging mountain bike rides in the world will be attempted later this month by an international group of adventurers that includes two Eugene residents. The five-man team hopes to become the first to use human power to circumnavigate Russia’s Lake Baikal in winter — as well as the first to bicycle around the lake’s entire 1,300-mile shoreline.
If the expedition goes as planned, it will take the cyclists 43 days to pedal — and sometimes push — bicycles with studded tires from Irkutsk down the frozen Angara River to Lake Baikal, around the frozen 400-mile-long lake, then back up the river to Irkutsk. Scheduled to start Feb. 19, the expedition is the inspiration of Christopher Pike, a 39-year-old Eugene linguist with a masters degree in Russian.

baikalWe here at Kona hooked a five-man team of nut-bar cyclists with bro deals on Kona Units as they attempt to be the first to use human power to circumnavigate Russia’s Lake Baikal in winter — as well as the first to bicycle around the lake’s entire 1,300-mile shoreline. 19, go here to read an in-depth article on the expedition. Check back for regular updates on this super bit (and majorly cold) epic. Visit their website here.

photoThe Dizzy Cycles 2010 Vancouver Road Closure Bike Commute Challenge, February 8 – March 12

What is The Dizzy Cycles 2010 Vancouver Road Closure Bike Commute Challenge? A lot of us are fair weather commuters. It’s pretty easy cycling in Vancouver from April to October, but bike commuting in February and March when the rain won’t stop, the sun doesn’t shine, and the temperature can hover around 6°C, and yes sometimes it does still snow, well that is a whole other challenge for most of us. Only the impending road closures, over-crowded public transport, and general road chaos forced on us by the 2010 Winter Olympics will make some of us consider starting our bicycle commuting season earlier, or for some, for the first time.

But don’t fret, we want to hear from you, the Vancouver Olympians by default — the Vancouver Bicycle Commuter. From February 8 to March 12 send us your tales and anecdotes about riding your bike in Vancouver during the Olympics. Close-calls, good samaritan acts, funny sights, famous athlete spottings, weird run-ins with security staff, etc. we want hear how you rode your way around the biggest party we’ve had since Expo’86! So park your vehicles, jump off the bus, dust your bikes off a few months early and start riding to work, school, to do your shopping, visit your family and friends. Read More

Helen Wyman is the 2010 UK National CX Champ!

All photos by Joe Sales

Having suffered from an unusually large amount of snow in January our national championships were postponed until this weekend. In some ways it was a good thing as it was more about holding a peak from worlds rather than racing in the middle of a hard training block. I also had the penultimate round of the Gazet Van Antwerp in Lille, Belgium the day before.

Not wanting to miss out on either race as both are important in different ways I just handed the itinerary to my logistics manager, who is also my mechanic, 2nd soigneur and husband, who sorted it all out. Just one of the many reasons I married him.

Steel is Real in Berlin

postkarte-02-400x300We wanted to highlight a super cool Kona dealer located in Berlin, Germany. The Radspannerei only sells steel bikes, stocking Kona SutrasPaddy Wagons and Honky Tonks. We dig their ethos, and their commitment to steel bikes. This is an excerpt from their website’s philosophy page…

The Radspannerei has been around for more than 10 years, right in the middle of Kreuzberg. Most of our customers commute all year around. Being ourselves a bunch of dedicated cyclists and mechanics, we never felt like like selling bikes we wouldn’t want to ride. That’s why we’ve decided to focus on bicycles made of steel. Why steel you ask? Steel is in many ways more appropriate than other materials for commuting and touring. We like the way thin steel tubes look, and how long-lasting they are. Aluminium breaks, when steel bends back. Its elasticity, combined with the right geometry, makes for a comfier ride and lets you give up on a suspension fork, thus saving weight and making your bike more energy efficient and reliable.

Mod Squad Cycles in Harlem steps up for Black History Month

the-geekFrom the reasoning of the Dawg name to the best comic book authors, from the history of the Hot to a timeline of industrial music, Cory has the trivia, and the opinions to mouth off about it.

To celebrate Black History Month, MODSquad Cycles, the only bicycle shop located in historic Harlem, New York City, will donate 10% of its February 2010 revenue to Kona AfricaBike and Project Rwanda. In addition, Kona Bikes will donate an AfricaBike for raffle at MODSquad Cycles to customers who purchase at least $10 of retail goods. Owner Oyé Carr says, “AfricaBike combines capitalism with good works. For every two bikes purchased by Kona retailers, Kona donates a bike to an AIDS worker. Bikes are not just for sport. They are also a means of environmentalism and a source for social change.”
