Baikal Expedition Underway

team They’re riding Kona Units, they’re insane, and they’re about to set out on a seriously frigid Russian adventure. This comes from our friends from the Cycle Baikal Winter Circumnavigation.

We arrived intact with all the gear and are now here in Irkutsk finishing up the final preparations for our Baikal tour which begins tomorrow. Everything is going very well, and the moral of the team is high. We have had fantastic luck creating interest in our trip and many local organizations will be working with us to help maximimize media presence and advertising potential for sponsors, ecological conservation, and the development of local tourism industry. Temperatures are cold, about -25 C. According to MCHZ, National Russian Rescue Service, the ice is in great shape this year, and we should have good conditions for our trip. Check out our site to see some of the latest developments and follow our progress: www.cyclebaikal.com. We will be updating the site as we go and hopefully sending photos along with text.

Dirt Rag Likes the Cadabra

This, from the fine (snowed in) folks at Dirt Rag

New Test Bike: Kona Abra Cadabra. Posted: February 23rd, 2010 by Justin Steiner

Thought I’d take a quick moment to introduce my newest test rig: Kona’s new-for-2010 Abra Cadabra. The Cadabra family–Abra Cadabra retailing for $3,699, Cadabra retailing for $2,799–sports the second generation (G2) of Kona’s Magic Link rear suspension, first introduced on the 2008 CoilAir. Kona’s martketing materials certainly make the G2 Magic Link on the Cadabra sound mighty interesting by providing 4″ of travel while climbing and 6″ of travel while descending. Here’s some information on Kona’s website about the theory behind the Magic Link design.

I’m pretty stoked about this bike for a couple of reasons; 4-6″ of travel that adapts to your needs automatically, the 69º headtube should be about right for the application, and the sub 30 lb weight could round this bike out to make a hell of a package. So, how does it ride? Good question. As I’m sure you’re well aware, we’re in a bit of a holding pattern until our 20″+ of snow melts. We’re actually planning a Dirt Rag spring break trip to the deep south simply to do some bike testing. For now though, I’ll just have to show you some pictures and specs.

Queens Bike Boom

basszilla_02Made In Queens is a short film that lifts the lid on an underground scene emerging in the outskirts of New York’s Queens borough. Directed by Nicolas Randall and Joe Stevens, the film looks at a small crew of Trinidadian teenagers, led by Nick Ragbir, who are obsessed with customising their bmx bikes with the fattest soundsystems they can possibly hook them up with. We currently have our designers hard at work to come up with a giant sound system that will mount to our downhill/freeride bikes. A-line is about to get very loud.
