“The Kona Sutra is an awesome package”

The Kona Sutra is unashamedly a touring bike. It’s heavy, it feels more like a mountain bike than a road bike when you’re on it and it’s got enough carrying capacity to take the kitchen sink. If you’re going for a quick ride with your mates on their carbon bling, the Kona is going to disappoint you. If you’re planning to cruise into the sunset, it’ll put a smile on your face.

That’s just what I did when I got my hands on it. I took a Friday off work, rode it in the Thursday before with everything on it and just set off after work for a three and a half day jolly. I deliberately loaded it up with more than I would normally take for such a short tour to give it (and myself) a good workout. I work in Bristol and set off towards Gloucester, crossed the Severn and on to Abergavenny through Monmouth. Then up to Rhayader, across the Elan valley to Tregaron, back across the mountains to Builth Wells and the train home to Bath from Abergavenny. The bike passed with flying colours. I was impressed with the comfort of the saddle and the bars and the stability of the bike under load (especially crawling up devil’s staircase – the sign says 25% if you’re not familiar with it).

Paul Bass in MBUK

Here’s a sneak peak of an article coming up in the next issue of MBUK. The piece features our boy Paul Basagoitia downloading the big air goods into an up and coming young gun. Click on the image to download and read a pdf of the article. To read a interview with Paul about his recovery (he suffered a broken collarbone at Crankworx Whistler), there’s a great one up on Pinkbike right now. To read it, go HERE.

Bertrand Gilles Wins Nisssan European DH Cup

After the first two races held in Argentera (Italy) and La Bresse (France), the final stage of the Nissan European DH Cup was held this past Sunday in Namur (Belgium). After team rider Kristof Lenssens broke his shoulder blade during training, Belgian champion Bertrand Gilles called for revenge on one of the fastest tracks of the season. Lot of speed, big jumps and bad weather, this last round of the Nissan European DH Cup was the perfect spot for the thousands spectators that joined the city for the race. Bertrand had solid runs all weekend, and while Belgian star Nico Vink took the win, the Barracuda/Kona rider placed third on the event which was enough to win the overall ranking of the series.

A well deserved place for one of the most talented young riders in Europe. This European title means a great end of a fabulous season for the team Barracuda/Kona. Riders and team members are now already working on making a more than perfect 2011 season.

Dog Rides Bike

This is really, really weird. Especially the close-up of the dalmation sitting down. So strange.

Regular Joe and the Search for Sweet Gulf Island Singletrack

Hunting for Singletrack
It all started with a vague idea, the connection of a destination with the faint promise of singletrack. Salt Spring Island offers all the elements of a great weekend get-away; ocean, funky town, amazing farmers market, and a laid-back island culture. The only thing missing from the picture was confirmed and recorded existence of sweet trails.

Knowing nothing of an existing bike scene on the island, I started in the place where all searches start these days: Google. The lack of information that popped up was surprising, but I continued to investigate. Armed with a couple phone numbers I started dialing. My phone calls led to very little, as the girl at the kayak store seemed to have never heard of mountain bikes, the tourist board had closed early, and the mountain bike association contact was the voice mail for a physiotherapist office.

Many of the best discoveries happen by chance, so I discarded my technological aids and went with the old fashioned way: show up and hope I run into a knowledgeable local. When we arrived on the island we went straight into the cozy town of Ganges to take in the amazing farmer’s market that happens every Saturday. As we perused the fresh produce and funky crafts that the market had to offer I kept my eye out for anyone wearing telltale bike clothing, or sporting chainring scars, or the more obvious clue of flashy bikes hanging off a truck tailgate. I spotted no such signs, as the predominate choice of attire at the market was long scarves, dreadlocks or “sporty” West Vancouver polo shirts.

Ride Earth – Mongolia

Ride Earth is the project of Tom Allen and Andy Welch to explore the globe by mountain bike (a Kona Caldera and Explosif). We departed from the UK in June 2007, carrying video cameras to document our expeditions, with the aim of promoting cycling as a viable mode of transport and discovering the world through responsible, open-minded travel.

In May 2010 Tom and Andy travelled with their bikes via overland public transport to Mongolia in order to look for the ultimate in unsupported wilderness biking, culminating in a 1000km off-road ride across the most sparsely populated country on the planet.

Extended Lava Dome Service

This comes from our good man Mike, from Olson’s Cycles in Forest Grove, OR.

“Spent Friday at a bike event on the campus of Pacific Lutheran in Tacoma, Washington. My son, Joe, is a student there and also works for campus safety. When he was helping set up the campus safety display, he brought out one of their campus safety patrol bikes. It was a 1996 Kona Lava Dome. Still in service. Not only did they have the one. All seven of the patrol bikes are 1996 Lava Domes. Still in service.”
