Konas Marathon Man, Cory Wallace 5th Overall

Excitement was in the air as the field of riders gathered this morning at 9am for the final showdown.
For the first time the 38km long stage from Ayton to Cape Tribulation was raced as a time trial,
whereby the athletes started in reverse order of the overall classification. Would Sir Bart with his
mighty pedal strokes on the straights be able to challenge his Swiss opponent’s place in the sun?
Would Urs Huber be able to counter the attacks on the steep ascents? Would Mike Mulkens after two
years and 19 stages, respectively, finally be able to claim a Boomerang? Or would the pro on the
climbs, Cory Wallace, once more reach for the stars?

Helen is 3rd again in Nacht van Woerden

Helen Wyman finished 3rd for the second year running in the floodlit cyclo-cross in Woerden, Holland. Starting at 20:45, with the temperature dropping and drizzle starting to fall, it wasn’t going to be everyones ‘cup of tea’.

The familiar sight of Daphny van den Brand shooting off the front through the first few corners was there for everyone to see, however this time, Sanne van Passenn was right on her wheel. Helen had a sluggish start, getting caught in several small battles for position before finally getting free and into a 3rd place.

At this point the chase to the two leaders began. Although the gap was small, with a couple of small areas of the course in total darkness, it was hard to close the gap.

‘My eye’s aren’t the best. I have rather strong contact lenses, and that doesn’t make it easy for me to ride in the dark, or to transition from dark to light. It’s no excuse as the 2 ahead are in great form right now. But the gap was close and my legs were good.’ said Helen after the race.

Helen did get to within 5 seconds of the leaders, and although they looked in touching distance, it wasn’t to be. Helen rode the race out to finish in 3rd, and took her 2nd podium of the year after her win in the UK.

‘There isn’t an easy race out here. The competition in women’s racing is getting harder each year. It’s getting more professional, and there are always new young riders coming through. Every time I race, I want to do well and ultimately I want to win. I’m sure that next win isn’t that far away and I’ve got 2 more chances this weekend.’

‘Then I’ll be going to Germany to try to repeat or better last years result at the European Championships. I know the course well, and I’m looking forward to the event. ‘

Result

1 – Daphny van den Brand
2 – Sanne van Paassen

4 – Pavla Havlikova
5 – Sanne Cant
6 – Arenda Grimberg
7 – Sabrina Stultiens
8 – Sophie de Boer
9 – Linda van Rijen
10 – Nikki Harris

Two Wheels to a Better Life in Africa

“In the United States and Western Europe cyclists use bikes to better their health and make their community a little greener, however, for those in the developing world, notably Africa, a bike can completely change a person’s life — in some cases it can save a life.

Four notable US non-profit organizations — including Kona’s Basic Needs Project, Hans Rey’s Wheels4Life, New York’s One Street and World Bicycle Relief — are working hard to bring bikes and bike centered livelihoods to people in the developing world.”

Shop of the Week – Summit Bikes, Bozeman, Montana

This week we pay homage to Steve Bjorklund, owner of Summit Bike and Ski in Bozeman, Montana. Steve’s been a Kona dealer for 20 years, nearly as long as we’ve been making bikes. With longtime Kona clients like David Quammen, a senior writer for National Geographic and Outside Magazine, Steve does it right, and has for a very long time. This review I found on-line spells it out quite perfectly… For the down low on Bozeman riding, go HERE.

“Small, casual, “hole-in-the-wall”, mom and pop type bike shop. Excellent customer service after the sale. Very knowledgeable staff. I bought a new carry-over Kona Coiler frame and Fox Float 36 fork. I am a cheap bastard so I moved all of my components from my hardtail over. Some of the stuff wasn’t compatable but these guys let me borrow tools, parts etc. and wrenched on the bike for next to nothing to get me riding. I’ve only been a customer for a short time and it’s a first name basis interaction now when I go in. In this town customer service is almost unheard of so this is a really nice change of pace. I can’t imagine a better bike shop. These guys are great.”

Official Date set for White Style 2011 in Leogang

The last gondola just carried the last riders to the top of the mountain and already the date is set for the next White Style. For everyone who is depressed about having to stow away their bike for winter, there is a silver lining. Winter doesn’t have to be endured without any bike action because on January 28th the White Style in Leogang is celebrating its five-year anniversary! The kick off event for the coming season is the perfect opportunity for the stars and aspiring stars of the international freeride mountain bike scene to show their latest tricks.

This past season was more successful than any other for Leogang; for the first time, the cable car transported more than 100,000 bikes! But the bikepark is not planning to rest on its laurels. Even if summer is barely gone, the preparations for the exceptional winter event are already in full swing. Just like this year, the jumps are not to be underestimated. On obstacles built purely from wood and snow the riders will really be able to let off some steam and blow away the audience. Every year, it is at the White Style that we find out which new tricks or trick combinations the different riders have been working on over the winter months to try and win the coming season’s summer events. Not just the sickest trick combinations, but also the perfect event organization will once again be sure to attract many visitors to snow-covered Leogang.

After Sam Pilgrim from the UK was able to convince the jury this year, next year everything is possible again and we will definitely witness an exciting battle for the first place. Either way, the White Style is a great way to bridge the otherwise contest-free winter months and should put you in the mood to get back on your bike tearing down the Leogang trails this coming season!
