Graham Agassiz, an Operator FR, a CoilAir and a Singletrack Shambhala

Aggy’s Journey Into Neldor
One man’s quest into mountain biking’s true Shire

Home to house burning anarchists, vortex seeking rave artists and heavily bearded mountainites, Nelson, BC (aka “Neldor”) defies qualification. Mountains shrowded in old-growth forest play home to a supernatural meld of dirt and granite, where a unique tribe of trail builder creates otherworldly ways through these magical woods. Yes, there are freaks, even wizards, but there’s also a resident order entrusted to mountain cycling’s deepest roots.

Fresh from Rampage and full of wanderlust, Kona Clump rider, Graham “Aggy” Agassiz embarked on a pilgrimage of sorts. He had always wanted to visit Nelson. He had heard so much. Seen so much. The pro riders and their seemingly insatiable lust for burl, the jaw dropping photos of endless relief-inhaling trail, the great catacombs of fun. Inherently, being a BC boy and all, Aggy’s soul tells him there are four must ride locations in this grand province: Kamloops, the Shore, Whistler and, well, of course, “Neldor.” In the fall of 2010 he would load his truck with a freshly forged 2011 Kona Operator FR and Coilair and hit the road into the unknown.

And so we tag along on Aggy’s foray into this hallowed place. A spirit quest of sorts. A knightly passage on a greater journey into professional freeridedom. From alpine to lakeshore, log cabin to rock slab and all the adventure in between, this is that tale.

Wicks is 2nd on Day 1. Ryan Wins Day 2 at Jingle Cross

It’s been a while since we’ve seen the Kona twin towers of Ryan Trebon and Barry Wicks tower above everyone on the podium, and for a brief moment, it looked as if the two lanky riders would regain their dominance here in Iowa city, Iowa. Trebon and Wicks took to the front early, forcing defending Day 1 winner Todd Wells and Jamey Driscoll to chase. With the numbers in Kona’s favor, it was perfect opportunity to put Driscoll on the ropes with a one-two punch and after Wicks flew up the opening climb up Mt. Krumpit and descended with a gap, it looked like a Kona plan was in place. But nobody had planned for Trebon to crash badly on the descent, and the rider would pull out of the race citing a painful wrist and hopes of a better showing for Saturday’s C2 event and Sunday’s C1 race. Driscoll would leave Wicks behind to take his first UCI win of the season leaving Barry in second.

Different Story here at the 2010 UCI Carousel Volkswagen Jingle Cross Rock SUNDAY: In the men’s race, Kona’s Ryan Trebon and Barry Wicks took to the front early again, but this time it was Trebon who lasted, not Wicks putting the hammer down for the win by 30 seconds.

Rockabilly Racing – Riders Ready: Race Report

Race Report – Rockabilly Racing’s 2010-2011 Indoor 4x #2

When registration opened on Tuesday night, the temperature outside was -6 degrees Celsius. Which as it turns out is pretty dang cold to be out racing bikes. But the temperature inside the Abbotsford Agrifair heated up nicely as riders tore around the track while warming up for the 2nd race in the 6-race series. Abbotsford BMX’s maintenance of the track has been amazing, and the traffic on the track so far has formed it into a smooth, quick, and really fun track to ride.

A few new riders built up the existing classes, while other classes were combined which resulted really great racing in the Pro/Vet Pro class and the Pro/Open Women’s class. Vitamin Water was on hand with free Multi-X Lemonade for all riders, and Sponsors Kona Bikes & Chromag drew a few toques, hats & hoodies to keep the draw prize winners toasty between motos. Points are starting to add up in the series, and the overall leaderboard is now online!

The series also received a new Sponsor and Lensman with the arrival of Clayton Racicot. Clayton snapped up a ton of pics of the riders and are now posted in his Gallery. Check out the gallery and if you see yourself on the track, contact Clayton for the ultimate Christmas gift for your Grandma. I guarantee she probably won’t recognize you.

Erik Tonkin on Social Reality and Zero Sum Science

Humanity

It’s hard to believe how quickly so much ground can be covered by bike. Yes, a mile is a mile here in New York City, just like anywhere. But the social reality of geography is ever changing. I think of it like economics: it’s not zero-sum science. Even though a dollar is a dollar, the concept of money is quite fluid. And so is our experience of space and time…especially on the bike. My bike commute back home in Portland, OR, takes about 10 minutes; it’s a bit more than two miles. I have to go around a golf course and ride over some railroad tracks. It’s nice and easy, and I can go an entirely different way that takes the same amount of time.

Most of the guys who work here at NYC Velo in Manhattan do not live on the island itself. Many, in fact, live in the Brooklyn borough. They say their commute takes 15 minutes and the idea blows my mind. They ride over the Manhattan Bridge. They pass the now empty but once heavily fortified New York Stock Exchange data center. Long Island University. The State of NY Supreme Court. The DUMBO neighborhood. Chinatown. The East Village. There are multiple firehouses and police stations, a secret service office, the Hell’s Angels headquarters. Probably a dozen coffeehouses, at least three of which are quite good. And there’s more…the understatement of the year. That’s right: 15 minutes. Let me tell you, it feels like a lot of space for that amount of time: there’s a hell of a lot of living going on. Again, my commute is 10 minutes, but it’s not two-thirds the humanity.

Happy Thanksgiving From Your Friends at Kona

To all our beautiful American friends, enjoy the next four days of feasting and football watching. But of course, don’t forget to ride your bike. And if you find it difficult to get out onto the streets or the trails due to excess beer inhalation and large-bird consumption, consider the picture below. Where there’s a will, there’s a way to do it via pedal power. Happy Thanksgiving from everyone here at Kona!

The Kona Family’s Latest Addition

Meet the latest addition to the Kona family, Charlotte (we’re still working on her middle name) Marcelet. She’s the apple of my eye.

Her favorite pastimes include sleeping, drinking mom’s milk and diaper filling. All systems go.
