One of those rare times I’m (almost) at a loss for words.

the-geekFrom the reasoning of the Dawg name to the best comic book authors, from the history of the Hot to a timeline of industrial music, Cory has the trivia, and the opinions to mouth off about it.

Our goal on the Cog here is generally to post about cool stuff we see, find and do. Sometimes, however, i feel the need to step on a soapbox though, so please bear with me.

Have you guys heard about the one where the rich financial manager got away with a hit-and-run on a cyclist?
No, that’s not the beginning of a bad joke. That actually happened.

Here’s a link to an article about the incident in question: http://www.vaildaily.com/article/20101104/NEWS/101109939/1078&ParentProfile=1062

Basically, a guy hit a cyclist, injuring said cyclist to the point that his ability to do his work (liver transplant surgery) has been thrown into question. Then, the guy that hit the cyclist doesn’t get a felony, and instead just gets a misdemeanor punishment because the proper charge would hurt his reputation.

115% Increase in Winter Bike to Work Week Numbers

YEAR ROUND CYCLING GROWS – 115% INCREASE IN WINTER BIKE TO WORK WEEK NUMBERS
4417 cyclists counted at commuter stations around Metro Vancouver

Vancouver, BC (Nov 8, 2010): Cycling is gaining ground as an everyday mode of transportation, and not just during the summer months. Thousands took to their bikes during Bike to Work Week November 1-7th. The event offered education, motivation, and celebrations around the region to nudge 197 potential cyclists into the commuter cyclist category, and 633 to become more than fair-weather riders.

Bike to Work Week (BTWW) is an online and en route event that was larger than ever this year. It is an important part of convincing interested but concerned potential cyclists to make the switch from other modes. This season, BTWW converted 198 brand new commuter cyclists and even more new winter commuter cyclists. An important part of the winter event is educating people on how to equip themselves to be safe and comfortable, and motivating wet-weather riding by having prizes, hot coffee en route, and friendly workplace competition.

Cycling is catching on, and the Bike to Work program is there to celebrate and support potential cyclists to get on two wheels. More information and resources at www.biketoworkmetrovan.ca

Pro Bike: Ryan Trebon’s Carbon Kona CX Major Jake

Ryan Trebon and fellow Kona Cyclocross Team rider Barry Wicks have always ridden custom bikes. It’s not that Kona’s stock bikes don’t perform, but rather that both racers are just too tall for them. However, that’s all changed with the new CX Major Jake.

In the past, Kona simply sized up their alloy bikes for the Twin Towers – “They made a stock 62cm frame,” said Trebon of his previous scandium Major Jake. “And they just enlarged ours by a centimeter in the top tube and a centimeter in the seat tube.”

Click to Support NEMBA and Mountain Biking in the Fells

A message from NEMBA:

Please take a few seconds and Give a Click to Help Mountain Biking at the Middlesex Fells. All you need to do is add your name and email to the following form and click “submit.”

http://www.gbnemba.org/fellscomments

The New England Mountain Bike Associatin (NEMBA) is pitted in a David and Goliath battle with the Sierra Club and Audubon to improve riding in the Fells, an urban park just outside Boston. The state agency managing the Fells has proposed a Trails Plan that, among other things, would provide for more bicycling opportunities – we need to support this plan.

The Sierra Club, Audubon and others are lobbing heavily to prevent any improvement for cycling, and Audubon is waging a mass email campaign to squelch any improvements. We need mountain bikers to support the draft Fells Trails Plan by November 19th.

Please GIVE A CLICK FOR THE FELLS …. even if you’ve never ridden there but might want to one day. All you need to do is add your name and CLICK!

Please pass this on to your MTB friends and ask them to do the same! It will take you 10 seconds to register your support.

European Championship Bronze For Helen

Luc Van Der Meiren photo

It was a case of déjà vu for Helen Wyman today as she finished 3rd in the European Cyclo-Cross Championships for the 2nd year running. Taking place in Frankfurt, it was a fast race from the start. Despite heavy rain on Saturday and during the night, it wasn’t enough to change the course and it remained a very fast event.

Helen had a slow start by her own standards, and admitted to not having the best day, but was able to regain the contact with the front of the race mid-way through the first lap. She proceeded to lead the race through laps 2 and 3. A group of 4 riders had formed including local favourite Hanka Kupfernagel, but from an early stage it was the Dutch duo of van Paassen and van den Brand that looked the strongest.

Hanka crashed on the 4th lap, leaving Helen alone to battle against the Dutch pair, but they proved to be too strong. Working together and making Helen working hard to keep them it proved too much and Helen was left to solo into 3rd place.

After the race Helen said, ‘It was a fast course, but there were still places you could use your strength and technical skills. I know the course well having ridden here for the last 3 years so I felt confident.’

‘This time last year, I didn’t think I’d be disappointed if I’d got 3rd in a European Championship, but today I am a little. The 2 Dutch girls were very strong, but they worked together and got the better of me. But I think the strongest 2 girls on the day were in top 2 positions. They deserved the top 2 steps of the podium. I’ll be back next year, even stronger, and trying to win the jersey.’

‘It’s still a championship medal and I’m always proud to win a medal. It shows I’m in good condition, and it shows how far I have come in the last 12 months. I’ve got another race on Thursday and then it will be a little break for me. I’m quite looking forward to weekend off now!’

Sean Babcock Wins Cross Crusade #5

Dave Roth photo

Hillsboro, Oregon – Sean Babcock survived tough battles in the mud today at the Washington County fairgrounds in Hillsboro, Oregon, for the penultimate round of the Cross Crusade Series.

Babcock’s love of the sport showed through in his boyish post-race enthusiasm: “It was an awesome, muddy course. It’s the first time I’ve raced in the mud since the early season Seattle races [StarCrossed and Rad Racing GP]. It was all super-muddy and slimy, and we were within five seconds of one another the whole time. It was perfect training for the Portland USGP, too.”
