Solstice Celebration!

the-geekFrom the reasoning of the Dawg name to the best comic book authors, from the history of the Hot to a timeline of industrial music, Cory has the trivia, and the opinions to mouth off about it.

September 21st, the shortest day of the year. Up here in Bellingham, WA, that means about 8 hours of daylight. For the past few years, we’ve celebrated the impending lengthening of days with a night ride that meets up at our somewhat fabled campsite, share beers and company around a fire, and ride on.

Last night’s Solstice Ride was one for the history books. Between 45 and 50 people showed up at the fire circle on Galbraith to enjoy a huge bonfire and good company in unseasonably warm and dry conditions. Many beers were consumed, and almost as many flasks were passed around the pyre as the jokes got louder and tackier.

Shop of the Week – Ozone Bike Department Austin, Texas

From its passionate but humble beginnings as the “bike department” of a local vintage clothing store, Ozone Bike Department, has been a fixture on the same city block of the Austin, Texas bike scene for some 20 years.

“I love bikes,” says Vytis Vardis, Ozone owner. “This is my life. If you don’t love bikes you can’t sell them and this is I’ve always done and what I always knew I would do with my life.”

Vardis has been building, fixing, riding or selling bikes since he was eight, when he was making $2.50 a bike to assemble one.

That grew into a passion for BMX, as a kid, then road riding in the 80’s and on to mountain biking. There isn’t a saddle Vardis he hasn’t sat on. It’s that passion for and ease with all things bike that permeates Ozone and makes you feel comfortable from the minute you walk in ‘til you leave.

“In Austin, Kona means Ozone,” says Vardis. “There’s something about Kona dealers that are different from other bike dealers. We’ve got that Kona tribe vibe. Things are possible here.”

Ozone recently renovated and expanded its shop at 32nd and Guadalupe Street by some 1500 square feet. Sales staff know more than a thing or two about bikes and their cadre of highly skilled, creative mechanics love to work on anything you bring their way. At Ozone, they’ll do whatever it takes to get you out on two wheels, including closing the shop from time to time on a Monday or Friday afternoon to take in a ride.

The Trail Name Shuffle!

the-geekFrom the reasoning of the Dawg name to the best comic book authors, from the history of the Hot to a timeline of industrial music, Cory has the trivia, and the opinions to mouth off about it.

“Wait, there’s a trail called Evil Twin?”
“Yeah, It’s at the end of Lost Giants.”
“Isn’t that just more Lost Giants?”

That was a real conversation in the sales office here last week, because our local trail system is a mess. Don’t get me wrong, Galbraith is a ton of fun, and truly has some world class riding, but the trail names and philosophy of where names stop and start is absurd.

The New Class Warfare Over Bicycles

Don Cherry and Rob Ford twist it backwards. The elitists are pro-car politicians, slowing up a better life for the working class. In Vancouver the pro-car crowd criticizes the Hornby bike lane by claiming to stand up for small business. In Toronto, after being sworn in as new mayor, Rob Ford declares an end to the “war on cars.” He plans to block a light-rail line and to abolish a $60 vehicle registration fee. Don Cherry congratulates him for rising up against the “elite” and slams “bike-riding pinkos” who supposedly once ran the city.

In Montréal a new political party that won office a year ago in the Plateau Mont-Royal borough begins to widen sidewalks, add bike paths and close some streets to traffic. For doing so, critics accuse them of engaging in class warfare.

Babes Love Brains

(Vancouver) The Prohab Helmet Society is a Vancouver non-profit organization dedicated to making bike helmets accessible for everyone. To fundraise for their 2011 year, Prohab has released their second annual calendar of 24 of Vancouver’s beautiful biking ladies. The $18 calendars now for sale on Prohab’s website, and in various shops across Vancouver and Victoria, just in time for the holiday gift giving season.

The calendar features 12 women on the cover in black and white, and twelve full color photos. This year’s calendar was put together from a collaboration of 5 photographers, 9 artists, and 24 models. Prohab provides affordable helmets to the Greater Vancouver area in British Columbia. Helmets are completely “pay what you can”, and Prohab accepts absolutely any donation. Each helmet comes with a reflective Prohab sticker on the back, and another one supplied in the box. “Usually people are really floored that this [Prohab’s helmet program] even exists,” says Co-Director Renée Le Page, “… they get excited about helmets. It feels really good.”

Since October 2010, Prohab has lovingly put 160 helmets on heads around Vancouver. Shop online for your calendar here.
