MBR Magazine’s First Look: Kona 2012

Kona‘s 2012 slogan is ‘The Long Sweet Ride’. Last week, in Crans Montana, Switzerland, we got to do more than a few long sweet rides aboard the all-new Entourage and Tanuki trail bike.

If you’ve never been to Crans Montana before, we’d heartily recommend it. Nestled above the vineyards of the Valais region of Switzerland, Crans Montana has geography firmly on its side. Only two hours from Geneva, and even closer to the Portes du Soleil, Verbier and Zermatt, it’s ideally placed for a stop off on any Alpine road trip.

There are three principle runs on the mountain, the Black, Red and Blue, all serviced by a two man gondola. The red run is fast, flowing and manfactured; typical bike park fare, albeit with amazing views across to the Matterhorn and the Grand Combin. Watch the headcam below for an idea of what the Red DH is like aboard the new Entourage. By contrast the Black DH is littered with natural obstacles. Bedrock erupts from the dirt, roots weave across the trail and there’s ample opportunity to sample the clean, fresh, Swiss air. It’s a brilliant mix of terrain with excellent flow, the highlight of which must surely be a tight, rocky canyon through which you are fired at about 25mph.

Swiss Bliss – Kona’s CransMontana Launch Impresses EU Press

The Valais Region of southwestern Switzerland must be one of the best places in the world to ride a mountain bike. Huge vertical releif, spectacular peaks and a lift, road and trail system that navigates the Alps like a giant web of unparalleled mountain access. If the Swiss do one thing besides making watches very well, that’s getting people from valley to peak and back down again in the wildest of ways. Makes sense then that Kona would want to have some Europe’s most prestigious gravity loving press along for a spin on our 2012 Operator, Entourage, Entourage Deluxe, and Tanuki Deluxe mountain bikes.

Helen Wyman Wins 6 in a Row in the USA

In her first 3 weeks in the USA, Helen Wyman has racked up 6 wins in 6 races. The run of wins has taken in all kind of conditions and courses and has proved a very valuable trip as she looks to polish her cross skills before the European season kicks off.

“I’m so happy with how things have gone. 6 wins is more than I’d thought would be possible and I still have 3 races to go. The courses have been fantastic and the organisation of the events is first class. In respect of the courses, there is no gap between them and Europe.” Commented Helen

“I came to the USA after a period of time where my off road training was compromised by a shoulder injury. Thankfully I have that all dealt with and it has just added more focus to the quality training I’m getting here during the races. To be able to push yourself in race conditions isn’t something that’s always easy to replicate in training, so this trip has been perfect” continued Helen “Logistically it has been good and no different to the travelling we do in a normal European season. I’ve got 3 more races this week and then it’s back to Europe to kick off the World Cup season” Read More

Life Cycle Bike Shop’s Geoff Huber – Cross it Up

For those of you that don’t know me, let me introduce myself. My name is Geoff Huber. I am no one special…just another industry guy who loves to race bikes. I started Life Cycle Bike Shop with two buddies in 2007. Cycling is my passion, probably is yours too if you are reading this. I started “working” with Kona when we opened the shop and Jimmy James has been there with support every time I have called for it. I (and everyone at the shop) rides a Kona. We feel in love with their 29r’s back in 2007 and haven’t looked back since. Kona bikes just make sense. I have ridden and raced a lot of different 29r bikes in the past and I can tell you that I have yet to ride one that even comes close to the ride quality of a Kona.

So enough brown nosing eh? The real reason why I am writing this is because once again Kona has hooked me up to do some racing and I want to let everyone know just how rad these bikes are. For this season I was lucky enough to get my hands on one of the first Major Jakes! Yes, Kona has gone karbon! The Major Jake is Kona’s high end race ready cross bike. Now I am like most industry guys and gals, I like my bikes to be set up a certain way, saddle, bar, chain keeper, etc. etc. Not the case this season. Except for a quick saddle swap I have raced this bike stock! But lets be honest…a full Ultegra group, Utlegra tubeless wheels, and avid brakes makes it pretty easy. Oh and lets not forget about the carbon…wow what an amazing ride. As an avid racer I have always tried to not let the gadgetry get the best of me, you know what I’m talking about “its not the machine, its the motor” and all of that. This is true, but boys and girls let me tell you just how nice it is to have a real race machine under you when the going gets rough. The Major Jake is smoooooth on the rough stuff…but accelerates like a Texas wildfire in 60 mph winds! The first night out on this bike, I did nothing but grab the drops, hammer the pedals, and sprint. I am definitely not a sprinter…but man this bike made me feel like one. Read More

Bike Rumor Reports on the Kona 2012 Launch

Kona Bicycle Company is local for me – Ferndale/ Bellingham, WA – and I have always wondered about their “tribe”. Their recent product launch was my chance to see what they’re all about, what products they had on tap and what technology they are expecting for the future.

Kona is a grass-roots, hard-core rider driven company with an emphasis on pleasing a rider who wants a long lasting, durable yet sleekly designed steed. The company’s new ‘non-slogan’-slogan is “The year of the long sweet ride” and from the look and feel of things they are on the right track.

Kona is making a big push to utilize carbon fiber but doing so with caution. They want to take things slowly to ensure high quality and fewer problems due to rushing to jump onto a band-wagon and then dealing with consequential returns and warranty issues… Not a bad idea!

Kona, 88Bikes and the Navajo Nation

2 years of discussion, planning and building led to a climactic confluence on September 7th and 8th when 88bikes unveiled its first, mobile, sustainable 88bikeshop, and 51 kids at the Whitehorse High School in Montezuma Creek, Navajo Nation, received bikes! The bikes were carefully chosen. They needed to be bad ass and functional, hip, urban, simple, but also able to take on the endless miles of rambling dirt roads, paths and trails that crisscross the Navajo Nation. Kona’s World Bike was the perfect choice. A three speed internal geared hub saves hours of pain digging sand and dirt and the ruthless goat head stickers out of derailleurs. Fat, slick tires provide maneuverability on the ragged dirt roads while also delivering a smooth, clean ride on pavement. The steel frames are up to the rugged conditions of the Nation. The black matte paint job gave the bikes an edginess the kids dug–while also providing a palette on which they could personalize their bikes. Read More
