House of the Big Wheel – Episode 1: Honzo and Satori

Kona has actively been involved in 29-inch wheel mountain bike design and development for eight years now. We were one of the first companies to jump on board the big wheel bandwagon, so it’s no surprise that in 2012, with 13 different 29-inch wheel mountain bike models available, we’re going to do a little bit of claiming. The House of the Big Wheel campaign is built around the four big bike stories of our 2012 29-inch wheel mountain bike program. On one axis we present the Japanese inspired Honzo and Satori: the Honzo being a gravity/all-mountain Kona Cromoly hardtail, the Satori a 130mm technical singletrack trail slayer. On the other axis, the Hawaiian heritage of the Hei Hei 29, our legendary 100mm XC competition destroyer, balanced with the all-new race royalty, the carbon fiber King Kahuna hardtail.

House of the Big Wheel rolls out in a series of print ad placements in fine mountain bike publications around the world, as well as a two part video series. The first film premieres right here right now, as we introduce the Honzo/Satori edit. Filmed in the wild forests and high alpine of the Coast Range, near Squamish, BC, the edit features two of Kona’s longtime 29 product testers, Kevin Noble and Trevor Porter. Episode Two, currently in production, will feature Team Kona XC superstars Barry Wicks and Spencer Paxson on the Hei Hei 29 Supreme and King Kahuna.

Custom MinUte with Wheel Skirts and Foot Pegs

The Kona Ute and MinUte were built with customization in mind. Over the years we’ve received dozens of reports showing custom racks, child carriers, stereos, you-name-it. Here is the latest modification from our friends at Sellwood Cycles in Portland, this one for child-carrying, complete with wheel skirts, cushion and foot pegs, it looks like it’s ready for Portland’s eight month long rain season. The fun never ends.

Pro bike: Matt Slaven’s Kona Abra Cadabra

American enduro specialist Matt Slaven has been riding a Kona for eight years. However, 2011 marked his first year of official ‘factory’ sponsorship as the Canadian company expanded their race program to include an all-mountain component.

Slaven has three race bikes: two 160mm Abra Cadabras, which vary by the weight of the builds, and a Coilair which, with 200mm of travel, enters into downhill bike territory.

All three use Kona’s Magic Link. This is a two-shock suspension system that automatically varies travel from an efficient short-travel climbing mode (100mm on the Abra Cadabra, 120mm on the Coilair) to a fully extended descending mode (160mm, 200mm), depending on what forces it detects.

Kona in the North (Like, Way Far Up High North)

Buff ridge trails overlooking lush valleys, glacier-fed lakes and verdant mountain meadows… sound like a good place for a Kona? Well, it is – and it’s probably not the place you’re thinking of. These pics were taken north of 60. Welcome to Whitehorse, Yukon, and the trails in our backyard.

While the summer in northern Canada may be fleeting, each sunny day seems to last forever. Photographer Tim Hogan and Dave Kerr took advantage of the long evening light to shoot a new trail called Logan’s Run. Built through the site of an old burn, the trail flows along a ridge and through fields of fireweed, young pine, and the blackened remains of the old forest. The Logan’s Run trail is part of a network of over 80 km of ski and bike trails at the Mount McIntyre Recreation Centre. For Dave Kerr and Kelly Proudfoot, these trails are literally in their backyard. Moving to the Yukon was a change from the pace of life in Calgary and Vancouver for this pair. They arrived in the fall and their first taste of Yukon singletrack was on cross country skis, not bikes. Then the snow melted and they have hardly missed a day on their Konas ever since.

The efforts of the talented City of Whitehorse trail crew and the local mountain bike community have combined over the last few years to create an extensive network of flowy singletrack and challenging DH rides all within City limits. Almost every trail has a signature Yukon ridge ride with views that make you feel as if you’re deep in the backcountry. There are miles upon miles of trails to explore – but that’s a story better lived than read.

One Million Kona Test Rides at this Year’s NEMBA Fest

2011 was the hottest year yet for this great event. Record temps (mid 80′s!) greeted gaggles of mountain bike enthusiasts from all over New England for this balmy two day festival of mountain bike demo’s, tours, rides, contests, and general merrymaking, at Bear Brook State Park in the Manchester/Concord, NH area. Our amazing dealer, New England Bicycle from Southwick, MA, helped us set up and send out 1 million riders on free demos on a fleet of new 2012 Konas. We made many new friends and created a rabid new Kona fan base in the area (mainly due to the sweet riding Hei Hei 29 Supremes). Thanks also to Phillip Keyes of New England Mountain Bike Association for putting on this event that has become a staple of the New England mountain bike scene.

Mountain Bike Action Reviews (and falls in love with) the Kona Unit

“We’ll go out on a limb here and state that the Unit delivers the best pedaling platform of any bike we have ridden this year.”

A while ago we sent a 2011 Unit to Mountain Bike Action Magazine to test and review. Seems they really loved the bike’s “simple sophistication.” We couldn’t agree more, but a very big thanks for the kind words indeed. To read the review, pick up a copy of MBA, or click on the image to read a PDF of the article.

“And how many sub-$1000 29ers come in at less than 27 pounds? The Unit is a single-speed with more than a single purpose.”

Amen.
