Kona Entourage on Richard Cunningham of Pink Bike’s Top Ten of 2011

Comeback Kid II: Kona Entourage

Kona knows how to make park bikes – they sponsor the bike programs of many of the world’s most prestigious bike parks. With all of that information welling around a bike company that sits on both sides of the border, geologically centered in the best technical riding spot on the planet, one would think that Kona would rule the category. For whatever reasons, this has not been the case, but the dry spell should be over if park riders get a taste of Kona’s new Entourage. This is the bike that bridges the long-wheelbase big bike feel with the nimble, short-chainstay all-mountain nimbleness. You can send it and it lands like a cat, or you can poke around exploring technical trails without feeling like you are tugging on bungee cords every time you top a short climb. The Entourage is a gravity bike, make no mistake about it, with 170 millimeters of travel, a slammed saddle and a 65-degree head angle, all it lacks is a dual-crown fork, but that’s the magic of park riding – a lighter bike with slightly less travel and a bit sharper pedaling is way more fun than a full-on DH sled for all but the hardest five percent of the terrain available. Kona’s Entourage is nimble in the tight stuff and simply pops off jumps. It’s a must-ride for anyone in the market for a capable park bike.

Helen Wyman: “Training, Training, Training”

Sandy Death.... So it’s been a while since my last blog. I would say this relates to my life just being non-stop. However as I am a full time bike rider I realise you would find that statement hard to believe (I did once have a real job so have the vaguest of memories of what it is to actually be busy). Well at least I have been travelling a lot around Europe.

After the European championships we set off to Monaco for some training and to get the Kona van re-registered in its native land. If you ever want to make a Belgian stare to the point they will walk into things, then get a Monaco number plate, set the video camera up, sit back and chuckle. I tried my hardest to find Philip Gilbert when we were there but he just didn’t seem to be doing my routes. Monaco is a very cool place with an obviously extreme amount of wealth mixed up with an extreme number of house cleaners. The coolest things about the place were the millions of flights of steps and public lifts (that’s an elevator to our north American cousins). You could cover a 1 km walk in 3 lifts, genius! Oh and the training was amazing too.

After we got back from Monaco I did a couple of races including the Koksijde world cup, which as we all know will be worlds this year too. I do really like the course, had a satisfactory result and am getting more and more excited by the minute. Read More

Kona Fart-O-Matic 3000 Holiday Greeting

For the 2012 bike season Kona produced thousands of custom fart machines, one for each Kona dealer in the world. These remote controlled wonders produce 15 amazing fart sounds and even include a bass booster speaker adjustment for when some extra rumble is required. We set our team rider Grant “Chopper” Fielder loose with one of the machines and a voice modifier instant r&b track maker website thing-a-majig and he came up with THIS. Warning: This may just blow your mind

Aggy Interviewed on VitalMTB

“The way I look at it, I had to work my ass off to get where I am today. If I don’t give it everything I have, someone will come up and replace me. It’s that simple. I don’t ever want to look back and have regrets, wish I did something different, chose another path…I’m sort of a YES man. I want to enjoy my life as it’s happening now and live it to the fullest.” – Graham Agassiz

Helen Checks in From Essen

to get back into racing after a relatively long time out, but it was a balance and sacrifice I’m happy to make given my goals in January. So it was with tired legs I started the GVA trophy race in Essen. It was also the first time I’ve ever done this race which made the race more interesting for me. However as it was basically underwater I’m still not sure what Essen really looks like. Parts of the lap, well certainly the conditions, reminded me of Neil last year and of course that brought back some good memories.

Ms. Vos was on the start and was certainly the favourite and she didn’t let the small but perfectly formed crowd down. She destroyed it basically, while I made every mistake possible in one race. I guess that was to be expected after not touching my cross bikes for so long. The positive side of it was that as the race when on, I kind of got back into the swing of things. I shut things down on the last lap as it was a pretty tough course and it was better to settle for 4th place and keep the tank fullfor the World Cup the following day. Read More

House of the Big Wheel Part 2: Hei Hei and King Kahuna

Kona’s House of the Big Wheel is built around the four big bike stories of our 2012 29-inch wheel mountain bike program. On one axis we present the Japanese-inspired Honzo and Satori: the Honzo a gravity/all-mountain Kona Cromoly hardtail, the Satori a 130mm technical singletrack trail slayer (see HOBW – Episode 1). On the other axis, we celebrate the Hawaiian heritage of the Hei Hei 29, our legendary 100mm XC competition destroyer, balanced with the all-new race royalty, the carbon fiber King Kahuna hardtail. Episode 2 premieres right here right now, as we introduce the King Kahuna/Hei Hei Supreme edit. Filmed on the IMBA epic Seven Summits trail near Rossland, BC, this piece features two of Team Kona’s XC pro riders, Spencer Paxson and Barry Wicks railing 50 kilometers of high alpine singletrack bliss.
