Infographic Of The Day: How Bikes Can Solve Our Biggest Problems

From Co Design: “There’s tantalizing data suggesting that biking could go a long way to solving America’s obesity crisis. And much more.

Americans are getting fatter every year, and weight-related diseases kill us at a rate second only to tobacco. There’s been lots of proposed solutions to that problem–rejiggering the food pyramid, advertising campaigns, soda taxes. But the simplest of all might just be bikes. Yes, bikes.

If you live in the suburbs where any bike trip would be riding along a highway, that probably sounds totally insane. But this infographic produced by Healthcare Management Degree actually provides several data points that suggest that bikes might not be so ridiculous after all.

A few stats immediately leap out at you: For one, 70% of America’s car trips are shorter than 2 miles, which translates to about an easy 10-minute bike ride:” read more

The Canadian National Snowboard Team: Cross Training on Kona’s and Fund Raising Auction

When the snow falls, some don’t just ride bikes…

The Canadian snowboarding team for example. They are all in the starting block as we speak. As the snow is falling, it’s their turn to shine after months of practice out of sight.

Practice? How do these guys practice in the summer time? Well I’m sure you got it: they get their blood pumping on their bikes, and lately it’s on Kona that our national team have sat their butts!

Simon Bonenfant, the head coach of the SBX Development Program, got his first Abra Cadabra early in the summer. Just a few days later, he got himself a DH bike and by the end of the week, he added a Shonky to his collection. As he puts it, “Biking is super fun, but it is also the perfect practice tool for us in the summer.” Read More

Africa Bike Project – An Interview

From the TDK Talks TM Website

“Being an INNERpreneur sometimes means conceiving, driving and managing a project, from the ground up. From a relaxing evening read of a monthly newspaper, I read about 2 young ladies, local to me, who are behind this project, the Africa Bike Project. They met, for the first time in 2009, while on a flight to Kipgrengwe Primary School, Kericho, Kenya, with the central Alberta-based international development organization, A-Better-World Canada.”

Hub Pub (Italy) Tests the King Kahuna: “una bella XC-Trail bike”

Read More

The Kona Riding Room in Eugendorf is off to a Successful Start (Germany)

Designs for Hope and Kona Partner to Empower the Poor

Everyone has heard of Africa’s need for clean water. You have also heard of their need for medicine, malaria nets, and proper sanitation. But are you aware of their need for electrical power? One fourth of the world’s population lives without electricity and as a result suffer major disadvantages in nearly all aspects of their lives. Having electricity means the possibility for children to study at night. It means having time to finish chores or to power lights in order to sew for extra income. It means listening to a radio for governmental news or to power cell phones, which are being used throughout the developing world for mobile banking. In fact, a recent Time article suggests lack of electricity or power is one of the largest barriers to overcoming poverty. A life without electricity is also a life with increased health risks and premature death due to inhalation of toxic fumes from burning fuels.

The people at Designs For Hope, a 501(c)(3) non-profit organization, are seeking to help eradicate this problem. Their solution involves one of the world’s most simple and amazing inventions: the bicycle. In most every developing country, the bicycle is the only means for transportation other than your feet. Bicycles are at least four times as fast as walking and can carry up to five times as much cargo as a person. The bicycle is one of Africa’s greatest tools. The engineers at Designs For Hope have found a way to harness the energy spent from daily bicycle transportation to successfully charge a battery, which in turn gives light to a once dark world. Kona has partnered with Designs For Hope to help get the word out about this project. Designs For Hope is using a Kona Ute cargo bicycle to pedal for a purpose…and people are noticing.
