Helen Reports Back From The Final Round Of The World Cup

So the final round of the World Cup has come and gone. It’s always a strange race when you have one eye on the overall and one on the race itself. Let’s face it, on a course like this there was never going to be a challenge to Vos. The course was wide, fair and pretty tough. Muddy sections led you into little runs and a long road straight. There were small variations to last years event, but you pretty much know what you’re going to get when you come to Hoogerheide. It wears you down as the race goes on and it’s pretty easy to hold a gap, but really hard to close one down. I was changing bikes every lap, and it was pretty noticeable that when riders skipped a change they were losing time carrying a heavy bike around.

Although you try to focus on the race in hand, it’s hard not to try to beat a rider who’s sitting only 2 points ahead of you in the World Cup classification. Those 2 little points equate to one place in a race, so it’s a big incentive. With Sanne van Paassen also not on the start line for this event due to ongoing illness, it meant there was a potential gain of 2 spots on the final classification. I entered the race in 7th overall, with Belgian champion Sanne Cant just in front.

Anyway, the race was pretty much as predicted. Vos set out in the front group, decided to destroy everyone at her chosen moment, she did that with style and grace, and left a race of everyone else behind her (I would like to point out here I’m not happy this is happening and I’m already plotting how I’m going to match her next season. Me and Kona, we are going to set the balance back next year….honest). The only disappointment for me was despite taking the early lead, I made a few silly errors and was lying back in 8th when all this happened. It also meant I missed the front group of 5. Read More

The Tour de France Road Gap Like it’s Never Been Seen Before

In 2003, Dave Watson, then a rider on the Kona Clump team, set off to the 100th anniversary Tour de France with Freeride Entertainment and photographer Scott Markewitz with the goal of road gapping over the race. This sniper jump took coordination and balls and kicked off a flurry of protest, praise and more press than any other gap ever attempted. The inset image is part of a never before seen sequence, shot from one of the several vantage points Scott set up to capture this amazing feat. Now PinkBike and Scott Markewitz have worked to animate this sequence as part of PinkBike’s Sequence Saturday, a weekly series that features some of the most exciting photo sequences ever captured. See it there now. To see the famous main sequence Kona poster we made to celebrate this event, click here.

Kona Victoria Project – Round 4 Mt Buller

Kona Victorian Downhill Series – Round 4 Mt.Buller

Heading to Mt.Buller for round 4 of the series Connor and Dean were both looking to secure the win, Connor who was sitting in 1st place coming into the race really wanted to improve on previous results to reclaim top spot in the series. Dean was also pushing hard as he knew a win from this race would see him secure the overall having done enough in previous races. The race was super competitive with over 340 riders trying their skills on a very demanding course. Connor and Dean both qualified fastest gaining some extra points and adding extra pressure to fellow racers chasing them. In the final Connor slipped a pedal out of the gate which no doubt played a part in his result, 2nd by .7 of a second. Dean pushed hard in the final and nearly came unstuck hitting a tree with his head which didn’t seem to slow him down too much, only to find his rear tyre going flat in the bottom section of the course. Dean pushed on to take the win in 3.27.048 nearly 5 seconds ahead of the nearest competition. Read More
