Kona Loves Cyclocross Video

It’s one of cycling’s more fascinating genres, populated by some of the sporting world’s more eccentric participants (and spectators). Cyclocross, where pain smilingly entertains passion in an arena that defines the pure simplicity of what it means to ride and race a bicycle. From the fanatical fans at European World Cup races to winter country road training regimens that spawn the stuff of legend, at Kona we’ve always had an affinity for ‘cross. Read More

Kona 2013 Bikes on All Hail the Black Market

…Upon waking up to ‘George of The Jungle’ blaring on my hotel room’s television set, I first exclaimed a few expletives and then shuffled away to get some food, read up on Lance’s disgrace, and get my head straight for another day of riding. After my previous day’s romance with the Rove and Satori, I shucked and jived my way through the collection to find the one that was waiting for me. It was across a crowded field when the Honzo and I crossed glances, and I knew ours would be an afternoon filled with affection; read more

Barry Wicks: Cyclocross, Mountain Bikes, and the Adventures They’ve Brought, Part 1

Barry Wicks is a professional mountain biker, cyclocross racer, and, as of last year, Kona’s race team manager. He cut his teeth racing in Oregon as a junior and rose to the highest levels of World Cup cross and mountain bike racing. His palmarés prove he’s a serious racer, but he remains laid back and affable through it all–a fact that’s made him one of the fan favorites in racing. I spoke to Barry while he took a break from his team manager duties, supporting his riders at Crankworx in Whistler, British Columbia. Part one of this two-part interview covers Barry’s introduction to racing as a junior, Erik Tonkin’s mentorship, his recent experiment with endurance mountain bike racing, his Chicago slump, and more. Kona 2013 North American Dealer Launch – In Pictures

For the third consecutive year we’ve invited our tried and true Kona Dealers from all over North America to come spend a couple of days with us at our US headquarters in sunny* Bellingham, Washington. They come from Tennessee, they come from Las Vegas, Maine, Ontario, SoCal, even Texas. And no, it’s not a wine and dine fest. Nor is it a brainwash tech farm either. Sure, they’ve got to sit through our presentations for a couple of hours each morning, but after that it’s all about the ride (and then, of course, the apres ride).

Here’s a look back at two launch sessions over the course of one sunny* week on our home turf. Sure, the trails were sweet and the beers neverending, but for us, it’s all about the people. This is our extended family, and our Launch is really a reunion of sorts. And boy, do we love the character, passion and good times nature of our kin.

Thankfully the bus trip to our Lake Padden demo center and the post ride entertainment were short. Men + endless IPA + confined space = quarantine. Read More

Kona Launch 2 – Smart Phone Photo Comp

On the first ride day of our second installment of the Kona Launch in Bellingham, Washington this past week, we challenged our dealers to a smart phone photo competition. With over 15 worthy submissions, as voted by the dealers here’s the top four. Each photo won a Shimano XT rear derailleur, courtesy of Shimano, with the top two taking home the extra bonus of new Kona Commuter bags by Brenthaven. Congrats to our winners!

Here our first place shot goes to the subject, Forest Davis of Bath Cycle, who managed to split his elbow open getting rad on the burly singletrack surrounding Mt Padden. Way to take one for the team Forest, enjoy your swag! Read More

Bike Magazine on Kona 2013

Kona recently officially launched its 2013 bike line. This week we’ll take a look at some of the new models as well as a few that have been given significant face lifts. Today we’ll focus on the massively re-worked Magic Link bikes.

One of the first things that struck me was the absence of the Magic Link-equipped CoilAir freeride model and 2+2 cross-country model. What remains are the Abra Cadabra and Cadabra models. While on its face this might suggest that Kona is stepping away from its unique Magic Link design, it’s clear, on deeper inspection, that this is far from true.

“What we’re doing with Magic Link,” says Kona product manager, Paddy White, “is focusing it on a bike where it makes the most sense. We were finding that cross-country riders mainly wanted something that’s as light and simple as possible. Riders who were interested in something like the CoilAir wanted something more purely focused on gravity. The Abra Cadabra, though, is the perfect bike for that Enduro style of riding where you need a bike to climb and descend exceptionally well, so that’s where we’re focusing Magic Link now.” read more
