Southridge Winter Series

Our Southern California Sales Rep Kelly Steelman approached me last fall and asked if the race team would be willing to head down to Fontana, California in February for some sweet XC racing. How could we say no? Fontana has a history of hosting the first rounds of the National Series MTB races, so we were excited to get down to sunny Southern California to catch some winter time rays.

Thursday evening is the weekly shop ride out of Coates Cyclery, so we strapped on our lights and ventured out into the wild nights of the Inland Empire. We were rewarded with flowing, crusey single track trails at Frank G Bonelli Park, and magnificent views of the sun setting over LA.

The next day we had some time to kill before our race on Saturday, so we ventured out into the hills of Glendora Canyon, Glendora Ridge and Mt Baldy Village. We discovered singletrack, winding, glorious roads and the feelings of great wilderness, all within 30 minutes of departing the lowlands. It was great. We also got very sunburned. Read More

Vernon Felton of Bike Magazine Tests the Taro: “The bike clears downed logs and floats over roots yet still threads the needle of super-tight sections of trail.”

Helen’s best bits from 2012-13

My top ten from the year:
As a change from writing about my ever so exciting life I thought I’d treat you all to an end of season round up of my best bits (oh-er misses). So here it is.

Best Team:
I have by far the best team around me and no I am not biased about this at all. My team mates are awesome and this season I have been able to hang out with the majority of them over the season both in Europe and America. I’ve learnt Paxson is hot (as he features on the dudes websites), Wendy is truly hilarious, Sean likes high heel shoes, Barry is actually a living legend in American cyclo-cross and Tonkin can dance to hip hop. They made my season even better this year and I’ve never enjoyed worlds as much as I did this year simply because of these guys. Read More

Kona Zing Supremes get their first outing with the Velocity WD-40 Team

With Matt Gibson returning back to the North West after a gruelling week in Scotland with the Olympic Development Programme, it was just three Velocity WD-40 juniors to contest the traditional season opener here in the North West – the Clayton Spring Classic. With Alex Braybrooke having stretched his legs for the second week running at Marsh Tracks in Rhyl, trying to outgun the E123s the day before, it was Christian his brother getting the first taste of adult racing on open roads here in the UK, joining second-years Will Thomas and Andy Leigh on the start line. “Julia Revitt, our nutritionist, is also quite handy on a bike and rides regularly in the UK whilst devoting her summers to riding in the Alps. She rides all sorts of bikes and styles from XC to DH and is now helping us to get stuck in to some bike testing. Julia’s just taken delivery of her test bike – a Kona Tanuki DL – and has beamed over her initial impressions.”

Cory checks in from the dominican republic

Getting to the Dominican Republic was slick. Hop a couple planes from Victoria-Toronto-Miami-Santo Domingo, arrive 2 am, walk outside get a shuttle into town, check into hostel, sleep for 8 hours. It couldn’t of gone much smoother. My rippin Kona Road bike, King Zing, and I were both safely in the Caribbean and ready to kick off the season! Or so I thought.

Day 1 in the Dominican turned into being the unofficial Stage 0 of the Dominican Republic Tour, “Le Tour De Santo Domingo’s Slums”. After having a chill morning in the touristy Colonial Zone, I started to build my bike so I could head over to find my teammates (I’m guest riding for the Quebec team 1% For the Planet) at the Fiesta hotel. This is where it all started to go sideways as the USA airline security had gone through my bike box and taken my bag of C02′s which also happened to contain my headset bearings. My bike was pretty f’d up without the bearings, un-raceable, but rideable after I jimmy rigged it with some headset spacers.
Lesson learned: if flying with C02′s, don’t pack them with anything valuable..

So I imprinted a google maps image into my head and took off on my jiggidy bike to find a bike shop in the city of 2 900 000 people. After 45 minutes of sketchy riding through slums I got to where the bike shop was suppose to be, but it wasn’t there. Danm. Next up was Spanish 101 as I practiced my spanish trying to find where a decent bike shop was. 2 developing bike shops later, I got directions to a more modern shop which could help me. Back through the slums, down the freeway, through a tunnel, a couple backroads and there was the shop. Aro Y Pedal. They were great. New headset bearings a new Maxxiss Courchevel tire, and off to the races I go! Almost.
