“I learn lots about the local cultural patterns, socio-economics, trade relationships, and more, just by seeing what bikes are on the road, who is riding them, for what purposes, what condition they are in, where they came from, and what parts are in the local market. In many parts of rural Africa it’s rare that you go very far without a bicycle of some kind coming into view. I’m not always able to take the best photographs through a car window, and I’m not always carrying a camera when I wander. But I’m always observing. Always bikespotting….”
