MBW-KONA go singlespeeding at SSEC14

The Singlespeed European Championship was held in Castlewellan Forest in Northern Ireland on Saturday 26th April and MBW-KONA had 2 riders competing. Garry “Dr WO” Daveran and Neil Martin were in attendance racing their KONA WO (Fatbike) and KONA UNIT. Garry who had had a bad fall earlier in the week was on the fatbike and this had been one of the races this year that he was concentrating on doing well in. The injuries he had sustained earlier had put the race in doubt. But this was a European championship so it was “man up time”.

Singlespeed events start “Le Mans” style with a mass run to the bikes and then hop on board (this is if you can find your bike as while we were getting ready to start the short run all the bikes were moved around meaning your bike was not where you left it) to start racing. The course was a 10km lap with some fire-road climbs, machine made singletrack and a very tasty man-made singletrack section that all had to be ridden 4 times.

Garry shot off up the first climb and once onto the singletrack powered off into the distance, from here he knew he was in first place and just had to ride smart to hopefully finish as winner, however this is easier said than done as singlespeeding is not easy…

Neil took it all a little more relaxed even dressing up as a jockey for the race. He still completed the course finishing well up the main field in 30th place from 250 riders.

Thankfully it was Garry’s day, his knee’s held up, the GrRANA Energy worked it’s magic and the KONA WO performed flawlessly all helping him to finish 1st becoming European singlespeed Fatbike champion. Sicilly next year to defend…

Garry’s winning bike, trophy and medal will all be on display at the up coming Irish Cycling show at the KONA display stand.

Really huge thanks to KONA Bikes, GrRANA ENERGY EUROPE and MBW Bike Shop. Without your support none of this could happen, also a special mention to all who helped out getting Garry’s Knee’s ready for the race, without you guys he could not have raced.
