We are here in Victoria on Vancouver Island to take a good look at the dirty underbelly of Cyclocross in North America. That’s right, the Single Speed Cyclocross World Champs have rolled around and Kona Endurance Team rider Spencer Paxson has made the trip from Bellingham (with partner in crime Dale Plant) to take part (and get a little drunk in the process). In a very generous move last night (after a few beers), Kona’s CX product manager Ian Schmidt offered to replace Spencer’s rather average look one-speed cross bike with a brand new 2016 Private Jake and Ian’s own personal wheels. The result is one stealth looking alloy frame with a touch of class.Run what Ian Brung, which is a 16t out the back. The Private Jake features sliding drop-outs, on you local shop floor it will be sporting an 11-speed cassette out the back. For added cred Spencer should have pulled out the hacksaw and fully committed, he didn’t. WTB Cross Boss tires (miniature Trail Boss’s) are set up tubeless on SRAM ROAM 50’s. As per the rules the plastic valve cap thing is goneburger.
ROAM where you want to.
Kona’s full carbon CX Race Disc forks with thru axles.
TRP Tektro Spyre brakes handle the stopping while that thru axle keeps things nice and stiff.
That’s our logo right there.
That’s another logo. We Heart Cross.
SRAM’s Rival cranks and an FSA 36t front chainring round out the drivetrain. If you were paying attention that’s a 36-16.
If you are out and about and forget what this very cool bike is made of, don’t fret, it’s right their on the top tube. Kona Race Light 7005 Butted Aluminum.
Keen eyes might have noticed an out of focus rival shifter on the drive side of Spencer’s bike. We dealt to that cable with some wire cutters. Rival SS, yup you saw it here first.
Anyone for a game of pool?
