Super Grassroots rider James Rennie reports in from Round 3 of the BC Enduro Series in Williams Lake

This weekend Williams Lake hosted the third round of the BC Enduro Series, another new location for 2016. Having not been before I was unsure on what type of terrain to expect, I needn’t have worried, as the small Cariboo town offered up some amazing trails that the locals were more than happy to show us around.1Q8A5113

The race was to be held at Fox Mountain, however another two stage race was held on the Saturday in order to show the visitors some of the best trails Bills Puddle had to offer. This was held at Desous Mountain and wouldn’t count towards the overall standings. I managed to get in 1 stage of the race before having to bail out so I could get at least one run on each on Sundays race stages, I must say Desous did not disappoint with the one trail I rode lasting over 12 minutes and offering up some amazing terrain. A ‘must ride’ if you are in the area.

Sundays race consisted of five stages. Varying from long flat leg burners to short fast downhill tracks. Racing kicked off with a leg searing stage one that woke the legs up in short order, mine apparently decided to hit the snooze button though, as I really felt the pain finishing the stage in 11th. After a short climb to the top which offered some great views it was time to hit stage twp. This was an awesome trail which started off flat before meandering through some fast turns all the way to the finish. I pushed hard on this stage to try and make up for my poor form on Stage 1, I finished the stage in sixth only three seconds off the stage winner.1Q8A5725

Stage three was what I considered to be the hardest stage of the weekend, it consisted of a long flat tight pedal before dropping in to a fun flowy section in a gully with a good helping of corners and jumps. I knew I needed to make a dent on this stage in order to stay in the running, I buried myself out of the start but about a minute in clobbered a tree which put me on the ground. I spent the rest of the run playing catch up eventually ending the stage in nineth.

The fourth stage was maybe the most fun of the weekend consisting of a bobsled style run down a gully with lots of hip jumps and banked corners. After the disappointment of Stage three I dropped the hammer on this stage and charged to a 3rd place stage finish. The fifth and final stage of the weekend was a short steep and loose stage I went all out again and bagged a sixth.

After all was said and done I finished the day in eighth place. My worst result of the series but a step in the right direction in terms of speed.

A huge thanks to the Williams Lake locals who made this weekend possible and showed us round even more awesome trails on Monday!

Next up is the first round of the North American Enduro Tour this weekend in Whistler. It should be a good test of speed against some fast Pro’s!
