Kona Dream Builds: Scott’s mix’n’match single speed Explosif

You’ve got to admit that Scott’s steel Explosif is a little bit of a mix’n’match selection of parts. Nothing really goes together on paper with this build, if you were describing how your old orange ANVL stem was going to look rad, matched up to your blue bars and your purple pedals. Well, you just wouldn’t believe it. But there is something about this build, maybe it isn’t a full-blown dream bike, but damn it if I’m not a bit jealous of just indestructible and versatile this thing is. On one ride you can hit the pump track, go for a trail ride, hell I’m sure you could even wind it back and send it down some classic Vancouver stair gaps on the way home.

How would you build a dream Explosif? Let us know over on Facebook or Instagram.

An ANVL cockpit an ESI silicone grips keep the bike pointed in the right direction.

Our new Wah Wah PP Composite pedals keep things moving forward…

…While an old XT crankset and North Shore Billet chainring drive the rear wheel.

Almost slammed out the back.

TRP’s Slate T4 four-piston brakes slow this rig down.

Some “re-branded” Fox 32’s suspend the front end.

The New Kona Explosif… Damn!

With new Kona models arriving in your local bike shop over the next couple of weeks, we’re doing a series of posts here on the Cog to introduce the new bikes. Keep an eye here all week for rad new bikes and updates to current models. Next up: the updated (and damn sweet if we may say so) Explosif…

Kona’s heritage in steel hardtails runs deep, and today’s Explosif is a direct descendant of our legendary originals. The Explosif’s Reynolds 520 cromoly frame has been updated with a new seat tube gusset for improved standover and retains our sliding dropouts for you single speed lovers out there.

This year we’ve pulled out all the stops with the Explosif’s spec. A SRAM GX Eagle 12-speed drivetrain and Guide brakes, the brand new 35mm-stanchion RockShox Revelation fork with 120mm of travel, a Reverb dropper with 1x lever, and tubeless-ready Maxxis tires on WTB i29 TCS rims.

The Explosif rides like only a Kona can, and we’re sure you’ll appreciate it for years to come.

Keep an eye here on the Cog throughout this week for more new Kona models!

Kona Super Grassroots rider Jimmy Lucchesi rides his Kona Explosif to a DH podium

Kona Super Grassroots rider Jimmy Lucchesi has been ripping up the local California Collegiate races. He took out the SuperD and the DH at Stanford’s collegiate race on his Process 153 and then he trucked out his Explosif hard tail for the next three races. In fact Jimmy and the Explosif are currently undefeated, winning the Berkeley Super D and the Cal Poly DH and the Slalom. Photographer Satchel Cronk nabbed this super cool photo of Jimmy railing the heck out of the bike on the way to one of those wins!ATT_1446525710752_imagejpeg_0[1] ATT_1446525710723_IMG_1804[1]
