Sea Otter Classic

Kona Raises Over $12,000 for Wildfire-Ravaged Trails

This year at the Sea Otter Classic we held a couple fundraisers in support of the Santa Barbara Mountain Bike Trail Volunteers and the Redwood Empire Mountain Bike Alliance. Both organizations are trail stewards for areas that were devastated by 2017’s wildfires. While we only had to deal with smoky skies in Bellingham and Vancouver, we were feeling deeply for our friends who were affected by one of the worst wildfire seasons in history.

Kona’s owners Dan Gerhard and Jake Heilbron wanted to pay homage to Kona’s bowling roots and threw a massive party at Monterey Lanes. A HUGE shout out goes to Bike Magazine, Maxxis, WTB, and SRAM for being co-sponsors of the event. We were joined by friends from all across the industry with representatives from Full Speed Ahead, Camelbak, Jenson, Dirt Rag Magazine, Santa Cruz Cycleworks, Dakine, Giro, Bike Rumor, B.R.A.I.N, Vital MTB, Freehub Magazine, Modus Sport Group and more. We even had one-time Kona Factory Team rider and current IMBA Executive Director Dave Wiens in the house. A special shout out goes to the crew from Palo Alto Bikes who drove 5 hours to the party after closing the shop, and then back again at 1 in the morning to open up again the next day. Legends. The lanes were packed all night as people channeled their inner “Dude” and partied into the wee hours.

Along with the bowling we also held a raffle for a limited edition birthday bike, a gorgeous steel Honzo. The lucky winner was Matthew Kurkjian of Moraga, California. Matt will be rolling on one of only 201 birthday bikes.

Between the raffle and bowling party, we raised $12,440 with 100% of the funds going to SBMTV and REMBA. We’d like to thank everyone who purchased a raffle ticket and joined us at Monterey Lanes for the good times!

“We are proud to support the rebuilding of California’s trails by working with REMBA and SBMTV. These types of organizations are what keep our sport progressing forward by helping to build new trails and grow local biking communities. Thank you to everyone who came out to support the cause!” –Jake Heilbron

And the Winner is….

It’s time to announce the winner of the coveted Birthday Bike! The raffle from the Sea Otter classic has come and gone and we’re excited to announce the winner. A huge congratulations goes to Matthew Kurkjian of Moraga, California! It almost seems like the steel Honzo was made for him.

“Winning this bike means that my mountain biking is about to get launched to the next level! I have been riding a Frankenstein hard-tail single-speed for 5 years now (my first mountain bike). I dig steel, hardtails, 29ers, and I’ve always admired Konas in the bike shops.” When asked what he’s most looking forward to about the bike Kurkjian is quick to respond that he just wants to get to know the bike. “I’m most looking forward to naming her! And of course our first post-ride beer together (duh). My first Kona. It feels like I’m moving up in the world!”

From all of us at Kona, welcome to the Kona family, Matthew!
