Bicycling Magazine has just posted up their pick of  “The 14 Best Cheap Mountain Bikes” and the 2020 Kona Mahuna took away Great First Race Bike award.

“If you’re looking for a bike that will serve you well for playtime on the dirt as well as hold its own as an entry-level race bike, the Mahuna is worth serious consideration. The 29-inch wheels roll fast and smooth out bumps better than 27.5-inch wheels, and the 2.25-inch tires are light and quick with enough tread to really bite into the trail. Plus-size tires have their place, and they work really well on bikes like the Trek Roscoe 7 Women’s and the Rocky Mountain Growler, but our tester appreciated the faster tires on this bike. Despite the bike weighing 31 pounds (size XS), our tester remarked how the bike felt light and agile in the woods. A 1×10-speed drivetrain simplifies shifting decisions and offers plenty of gearing choices at both the low and high end. And it comes with flat pedals so it’s ready to go right out of the box.”

We’ll update you when Bicycling posts its full review.
