I headed up to Bedford on Sunday to give my new Major Jake a first run out in the Central Cyclo Cross League. After a quick warm up on my Jake the Snake (now having a well-earned rest as my spare bike) I went for a blast on the Major Jake and immediately felt the difference; It just felt so sharp and quick, even in all that mud…
Conditions were as expected for a course located next to a lake during one of the wettest weekends on record, but the sun was out when the whistle blew and we set off for an hour of muddy hell. I took the lead during the first half a lap and held onto it for 55 minutes as we slogged round the deep, sticky mud of Boxend Park. It was only on the last lap, whilst battling for position with the only other close contender, that a length of course tape shrink-wrapped my cassette and I had to run for about a kilometre to the pits, watching my rival vanish into the distance. It would have been great to report back with a win on my first time out, but sadly it wasn’t to be. Luckily, I’d built up enough of a gap to hang in for 2nd place.
Hopefully it won’t be too long before The Major and I claim our first win.
This was round 7 of the Central CX League and, although a couple of the big-hitters were absent, it was still a good strong field. I’ve raced 4 Central League events so far and have 1st or 2nd place points in all of them. If I can get two more good rounds in then I’m in with a chance for the league… Watch this space!
