Josh built the bike this summer as he’d had just moved to Whistler and wanted to create the ultimate park bike for his first season. “I wanted something simple and burly but not as cumbersome as a full downhill bike. The aim was an oversized BMX with suspension.” Working as a mechanic for a Kona dealer, (Whistler Bike CO) he figured that the discontinued Proces 165 frame suited his needs perfectly. He got in touch with his Kona rep to see if one could be tracked down. “The mullet seems to be fashionable right now so I thought I’d go for the best party set up, 26 in the rear, 27.5 in the front.” He opted for a single-speed setup and cranks from Profile Racing coupled with a Deity pivotal seat to complete the BMX feel.
Josh’s BMX roots are super obvious on his 2018 Kona Process 165 build, case in point, the Profile Racing tubular steel crankset and matching 36t Profile Racing Sabre.
There’s more BMX flavor out the back, with an SBone Boner chain tensioner keeping the single-speed setup running smoothly on Profile Racing Elite hubs.
Chromag Radar flat pedals ensure that shins remain on the endangered species list.
Up front, you’ll find another rad Profile Racing Elite hub, both front and rear hubs are laced to Chromag Ally rims (27.5” front and 26” rear), both wheels are shot in rubber from Continental, a Der Baron 2.4 front tire 27.5” and Der Kaiser 2.4 rear tire 26”. Suspension wise Josh’s mullet 165 is sporting a 170mm travel RockShox Zeb Ultimate fork and a RockShox Super Deluxe shock.
A DMR Defy stem and a matching DMR MK4 Wingbar kick off the cockpit, a set of TRP Quadiem G-Spec brakes with 200mm rotors slow things down.
The rear brake is routed through the steerer to alloy bar spins. Spank Spike grips and a Deity Frisco Pivotal seat complete the cockpit.
“Now that the bike park season is over I’ve switched up the single speed park set up for 12 speed and a dropper. Once Whismas comes again I’ll return it to it’s park build state.”
Josh’s winter setup comes complete with a Spengle one-piece carbon wheelset (27.5 front and rear), Schwalbe Magic Mary tires with Vittoria air liner inserts, SRAM GX Eagle 12 speed full drivetrain and a Shimano Pro Koryak dropper and Turnix saddle.
