Jon Herring of Jon’s Bike Repair built up the ‘Kila-Honzo’ a while back and he based the paint of that build on this 1995 Kilauea, then he came across this frame, and he knew it was meant to be the matching bike to the ‘Kila-Honzo’. Let’s take a dive into this build…

Jon isn’t fussed about building a bike catalogue spec from back in the day, but he likes to build them in the ball park of what was around so it didn’t seem right for him to build it with XTR so he opted for a mix of Deore LX and Deore XT.
For the forks Jon opted for a period-ish RockShox fork and a riser bar as it was about this point that people were going away from flat bars.
Jon’s friend also managed to source some Kona A and B drive tires for this build, and somehow after all these years they are still in good condition!

For stopping power, Jon decided on Curve brakes that were from the same period, also in the cockpit you’ll find an FSA headset in red to match the rest of the accents.

Jon is stoked to have this Kilauea and the ‘Kila-Honzo‘ around the shop as it shows what we used to ride and where the bikes have progressed to!
