We found Tom’s epic Hei Hei CR Race build when he added the #KonaDreamBuilds hashtag to his bike and boy are we glad, this bike is something pretty darn special! Ever run into the problem where you are a mountain biker at heart but all your buddies ride gravel?  It seems Tom found himself in that situation recently and he decided to do something about it. The result is this one-of-a-kind Hei Hei CR Race.
“I started this build with the plans on making the lightest “downcountry” bike I could.  `The Kona Hei Hei CR Race frame was my canvas.”
Tom wanted the bike to be capable in the PNW so opted for a wireless X01 AXS groupset.

An oil slick rainbow SRAM XX1 chain mated to an X01 rear cassette completes the drivetrain.

Braking is a two-piston affair that comes courtesy of SRAM’s top Level Ultimate Rainbow brakes, complete with carbon lever blades.

A Newman carbon handlebar kicks off the cockpit components, while SRAM’s Level Ultimate levers complete with Hopp Carbon Components composite reservoir covers save a gram or two. OneUps alloy dropper post lever and Sensus single lock-on grips complete the package.

Suspension upfront is the all-new Sid Ultimate SL, its 32mm stanchions and 120mm of travel is dampened by the Rock Shox Race Day Charger.

OneUp’s V2 seatpost are the shortest in class, that fact, combined with our deep seat post insertion, meant Tom could slam is 210mm post right to the collar.

The uber light wheels have been built to be as light as possible, Newmen composite rims are laced to  DT Swiss 180 EXP hubs with Berd spokes. 1050 grams for the set with tape and valves.

Given that this bike pulls double duty as a gravel bike Tom opted for Specialized’s fast rolling S-Works Renegade 2.1″ XC rubber.
