This weekend saw the first road race of the season for the Velocity WD-40 juniors, “The Clayton Velo Spring Classic”, in which we had a full complement of four riders.
This is an event in which the juniors go head-to-head with some of the best elite riders in the UK, albeit with a handicap advantage.
The Velocity WD-40 riders included Alex Braybrooke, Jack Escritt and Fabian Brennan joined by guest rider Ben Macintosh. The four lads set off in a group containing 25 other juniors with a 7 minute advantage over a hard chasing group of Elite and 1st category riders.
It was during the first lap of the four mile open road circuit that the Velocity boys took the bull by the horns and broke off the front of the other Juniors, setting about the task of gaining and holding an advantage for as long as possible over the 14 laps. With prize money for the first rider over the line on each lap, the Velocity boys ticked off lap after lap, gathering the primes on their way.
It took the Elite group almost the entire race to catch the leaders, only catching them on the penultimate lap when a breakaway group caught them up. Despite fighting hard to stay with the new race leaders, their earlier efforts in very windy conditions took its toll and it was an Elite rider (Simon Wilson of Wheelbase) who took a solo victory.
The Velocity WD-40 riders displayed some very aggressive riding throughout the race, gaining many plaudits for their approach to their inaugural senior road race.
At the same time, the riders were able to showcase their new Kona Bikes supplied by Global Bike UK, which we understand handled the condition superbly.
