Allegro Cyclery is a medium-sized, downtown Walla Walla bike shop, with a casual vibe, that’s owned and run by riders Michael Austin and Steve Rapp. It’s the cheerful culmination of a love and appreciation for cycling born from decades in the saddle.
“Pedaling for the first half century of my life has led me to where I needed to be, surrounded by bikes and the people who enjoy the lifestyle,” says Austin.
Rapp and Austin opened the shop in 2005.
“We’re exactly where we want to be,” says shop manager, Justin Bannerman who joined Allegro in 2008. He came to the job with 22 years of bicycle racing and retail experience, previously managing or owning shops in Anacortes.
Allegro – a musical term that means fast, quick, brisk. Key ingredients to any great ride!
Cycling advice: “Ride with someone better than you,” says Bannerman.
Favourite ride: – Tollgate, in the Blue Mountains, southeast of Walla Walla. Spilling into southeastern Washington state, but located largely in northeastern Oregon, the Blue Mountains are alive with the sound and allure of sweet single track. What does sweet single track sound like? Umm, umm good.
Favourite Kona: – Major Jake and the Hei Hei Supreme.
Last ride: – Galbraith Mountain, Bellingham, Washington.
Best area bakery: – The Coffee Perk and the Walla Walla Bread Company.
Favourite local music venue: – When not listening to the Beattles on his Ipod, Bannerman heads to Sapolil Cellars – a small, local winery that hosts great blues on the weekend.
