VeloDeRoute.com first got hold of this Steel Rove to build it up as a race bike for Red Bull’s Road Rage downhill road bike race back in 2013. When the race was cancelled they decided to subject it to a one serious long term test. It’s done time as a gravel grinder, a CX machine (it has been used for the Redbull Velodux Urban CX as well as other local races), a single track eater and a commuter.
The reviewer, Amael Donnet, is well known in France and Switzerland. He was a pro road bike racer and turned to MTB when Enduro was in it’s beginnings 15 years ago. He lives in Valais, Switzerland, a location that offers lots of possibility to push the Steel Rove to its limits. After over two years of riding, the frame is still shining.

If the initial “CX” are affixed on the top tube of the bike Canada, its use is not limited to cyclo-cross. On his handlebars, you’ll quickly outside the box. Cyclocross in gravel, through the Vélotaf or travel, Rove wants to live all kinds of adventures.
For Road Cycling, testing Rove coincided with the announcement of a second Red Bull Road Rage in France. With the purpose nimbly down the slope like a velociraptor in pursuit of its prey, so we were looking for a steel frame, the generous wheelbase and compatible with the brake disc. The test is canceled, the fault of a prefect, we forked over a long-term test.
Armored More … sexy!
Although offering a clean visual, Rove has been designed to absorb the bad shots. Behind a sleek and sexy look, it hides a rebel character. History of staying in great rates, Kona has opted for CrMo steel tubes, double thickness, TIG welded. The framework architecture is an example of classicism. For maximum versatility, the frame has eyes for the installation of mudguards and a luggage rack. In the same context, the geometry is a more subdued version of a pure cyclo-cross.
In the quest for nirvana
The Rove was mounted with a hybrid braking system Hope, Hope carbon wheels and a Campagnolo Chorus group. Having failed to find a nice braking, the marriage of Italian levers and calipers English is not perfect, the divorce was granted in pain. For ease of use and its sleek aesthetics, we finally installed a group Sram Force 1 (1×11). Heavy and not really comfortable, steel fork has been replaced very recently. The wheels and tires are evolving according to our output, which varies between the cyclo-cross, or the gravel on the road.
A faithful companion
Road mode outputs of winter mule to cyclo-cross races through the gravel sprees and even a DH marathon on snow, we have not arranged Rove. He has seen and experienced almost everything! Despite an assassin limit treatment, he was able, thanks to its robustness, keep a fairly good pace. More biclou another committed suicide !!! We we tried …
Next the wheels, tires and cockpit chosen, that Rove can meet any challenge and meet almost all your wishes. Except that of being a machine to obtain KOM! Unless forgetting some components, Rove will never be a light bike …! If we add the long bases, called a concept that Rocco Bart in Kona, nervousness is not his most significant. On his handlebars, should be accelerated smoothly, we increase the pace to the couple.
If he does not play in the yard of drag, it has other advantages. Its versatility and strength are its main strengths. Although being built in a medium range of steel, comfort and rigidity meet this. The bottom bracket is sufficiently locked and the rear triangle filters vibrations and small shocks. At the sight of his friendly tariff, steel Rove distils excellent feel. Aside from the tabs 9mm that do not offer a great control accuracy during heavy braking, heavy and uncomfortable fork. The final assessment proves friendly, bravo Kona!
