After a season of chasing the Lifetime Grand Prix, Kona rider Kerry Werner returned to his roots for the 2023 USA Cycling Cyclocross National Championships at Joe Creason Park in Louisville, Kentucky. At the 2022 National Champs Kerry had earned himself the Single Speed CX National championships title in a tight race with Tobin Ortinblad, on Friday he lined up to defend it and in a carbon copy of last year’s race he again claimed victory, this time over Lance Haidet. Congratulations Kerry!

“I love racing single-speed because it levels the playing field between two riders. It makes the race more about bike riding. Lance and I are super close in fitness and form so the race was so close from gun to finish. We mirrored each other it was impossible to get away. It came down to the last lap and Lance let me lead into the final technical section where there was no room to pass to the finish. He tried a hail mary on the final right-hander but I shut him down then sprinted the 120m with him right behind me. It’s kind of comical watching single-speeders sprint. He couldn’t do anything.”

Sunday was the final race of the 2023 Cyclocross USA National Champs week and Kerry got the call-up for the front row in the men’s Elite race. The short lap format is a massive change from Kerry’s season of 100km plus races, and hanging with the top group for fifth place is a massive achievement for a guy who only rode a handful of CX races in 2023.

“I was pumped to be the last call-up on the front row. The start was full on but I found a good position and stayed in fifth all day. I couldn’t squeeze quite enough out to hang with the front four and I yo-yo’d the whole race. I moved into fourth when Bruner mech’d, then he came back by, to win. I had a last-lap battle with Curtis but couldn’t come around him at the end and settled for fifth place. I was excited about this nationals. I had good luck here the last time it was in Hartford, I found my first Elite podium, and after pre-riding the course I was happy with how things were shaping up.”
