Full-time Marine biologist with a long time passion for offroad adventures and Kona bikes aficionado (aka Kona UK squad) Valerio, decided to make the big move from his Honzo CR to the 2019 Hei Hei CR/DL last winter. The aim was to build the weapon for the 2020 cross-country season in the UK and over but… well, everyone knows what happened! Valerio had just the time to enter a couple of races before lockdown took over.

Valerio has opted for an hybrid combination of Shimano XTR/XT 12 speed shifter and rear derailleur accompanied by a 9-50t E*Thirteen TRS cassette pulled by a KMC X12 ti-gold chain. Rotor Kapic carbon cranks transfer power to a 34t Rotor Qring (oval) that is interfaced with InPower Rotor power meter to keep all those watts under control. A C-bear ceramic bottom bracket minimises the effort in pushing the cranks with some evergreen Crankborthers Eggbeater 4 Ti pedals.

A Rockshox Sid RL and a Monarch XXX with lockout keep the suspension compartment running smooth, efficient, and lightweight. A prototype pair of 1210g carbon König Wheels (XC 25mm rim internal width) are coupled with a Vittoria Barzo 2.25 on the front and Mezcal 2.25 on the rear for flying and keeping traction in the most technical racecourses.

The Hei Hei is stopped by some great Shimano XTR 9000 Race brakes with Aligator aries 180/160 rotors. The cockpit is composed by no brand carbon components, a Selle Italia SLR X-Cross saddle, and a pair of KCNC Eva grips.

Nice and clean, Valerio’s Hei Hei is customized with a Rotor Race Team stem cap (his racing team in the UK) and the frame is protected with a ProtoTape regular kit by ProtoBrand.

On the scale, Valerio’s Hei Hei hits the mark at 9.55kg…
