Erin Sleppy of Sleppys Cycles hosted an Intro to Bicycle Care clinic at the Kona Bike Shop to empower a group of cyclists in the Bellingham area. Erin is an incredible mechanic at the Kona Bike shop who also runs cycling education workshops especially for women and non-gender conforming people.

Erin started from the top down and explained all the fundamentals of bikes. Everything that makes our tires spin!

Erin demonstrated how to wrench on her own bike and had the rest of her class wrenching afterwards. She explained the ins an outs of tricky little parts like derailleurs, disk brakes, and dropper posts.

Kona staff including bike shop Manager Meg Couler were present to lend a helping hand, answer questions, and contribute to Erin’s safe space for everyone to explore the world of bike mechanics without barriers or judgement.

Sleppy’s Cycles has identified that bike shops can sometimes feel unwelcoming or standoffish to underserved folks in the bike industry like women or non-gender conforming people but stoke was high during this class and afterwards the participants enjoyed a welcoming and safe shopping environment at the Kona Bike Shop.
